By travelling through the remote areas visited on this safari, your presence generates direct benefits for local communities. There is often little opportunity for employment in these regions and your stay provides opportunities to local people to train as guides, drivers, and camp assistants. This capacity building enables them to acquire skills with which they can find employment and thus generate income to support and educate their families, thereby providing direct benefits to future generations.
Another significant benefit is derived from enhancing the value of local heritage, which is thus preserved for the future generations. Your visit carries the clear message that sustainable tourism offers a bright future for remote communities while providing a strong incentive for conservation.
Grootfontein: San Bushmen community
On this trip we will visit either the Ombili Foundation San Bushmen community project or another local San Bushmen community. There will be an opportunity to go out tracking and gathering with the San Bushmen, and to spend a night and listen to the stories and songs of these fascinating people. The San Bushmen are the oldest ethnic group in Namibia having inhabited Southern Africa for an estimated 20,000 years. Around 30,000 San Bushmen live in Namibia, but only 2,000 of them still follow a traditional way of life. The San Bushmen have a deep understanding of nature and the ecology, living in harmony with their environment. Taking part in their everyday lives, we stay overnight in the village, helping the men track animals and watch the women gather and prepare seeds and plants.
AfriCat cheetah project
There is also an opportunity to visit the AfriCat cheetah project in Okonjima where we can learn about the threatened cheetah populations of Namibia, and have a chance to see the work being done by the AfriCat Foundation. For more information, see
