How Masai Mara tour in Kenya makes a difference
Environment
All plastic is collected and transported for off-site recycling. Bio-degradable waste is converted to compost for our vegetable garden at Basecamp Mara.
Leave a positive footprint and reduce your carbon footprint by planting a tree in our tree plantation at Basecamp Mara, or support one of Basecamp Foundation’s wildlife conservation projects.
Staff from both camps are employed locally at a percentage of 90% of all staff being local this relates to all positions including management, our manager at Basecamp Masai Mara is a maasai lady.
All guests are thoroughly briefed by our guides on all activities & correct conduct whilst in the presence of wildlife & in a wildlife area. In addition to this, there is a code of conduct for the conservancy.
Where possible we use local labour for our camp construction, often this is for the unskilled work as the maasai are mainly pastoralists & it is very hard to find skilled construction people amongst them. The eco measures we practice are as mentioned above , solar power, recycling, in Basecamp Masai Mara we have composting toilets, community projects such as our tree plantation where we have planted over 40,000 indigenous trees, our beading project where we have 113 ladies working on product for both our shop & international supply , we have managed here to obtain the fair trade certification.
