Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Historical tour of Ethiopia

This is a responsible tour to choose for a number of reasons. Firstly we only use local guides, educated within Ethiopia. Thereby ensuring employment for local men and women. This tour is culturally sensitive - staying in hotels run by local people where clients will learn about local environmental, social and cultural issues. You will be encouraged to visit local restaurants and to buy from local shops and markets. This will be made easier for you by the provision of an Ethiopian SIM card or phone with which you can keep in touch with your guide helping you to feel safe to wander.

We protect the local environment and offer our clients tips on taking a non invasive approach, always removing all signs of our presence and respecting the environment with its vegetation and wildlife. Travellers may keep a record of animal and bird sightings for ongoing listing to be published on the website for other travellers making a positive contribution to the conservation of the wildlife in the locality.

On this particular tour clients are encouraged to bring their torches when visiting old churches. This is because we try to minimise the practise of bringing ancient books and artefacts in to the sunlight for travellers to view and the ensuing deterioration of these valuable treasures. Clients will be made aware of the various projects in Ethiopia with which we are personally acquainted. These projects are effecting a positive change to the environment by their actions; i.e. tree planting, seed distribution.

Ethiopia is pledged to be carbon neutral by 2025. Clients may like to consider offsetting their carbon emissions.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Scrambling up the rocks to the rock hewn churches of Tigray, adrenaline, amazing views and fantastic history.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for long drives on dangerous roads, awesome scenery but nailbiting at times. Although the sights were amazing some of them were also busy, take a few extra days and try to get a bit more off the tourist trail, there are places to stop on the way between the major sights, would have been good to stop rather than motoring between major places.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Def supported local people. The environmental impact of driving a car 100s of Km is not great but only avoidable by flying: even worse. We employed lots if local guides etc so putting money directly into the communities.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great trip, Ethiopia is amazing, mountain scenery is gorgeous, sights and history totally different to anything else I've seen in Africa.
