Despite the relative economic stability and the luxury of being sparsely populated Botswana is a country battling huge issues. Botswana has one of the highest HIV infection rates in the continent at 38% of the population and an increasing unemployment rate. Unfortunately for such a naturally stunning country this causes major pockets of the population to struggle through day to day life.
In coming to Botswana you will not only experience one of the most naturally beautiful and culturally diverse countries in the world, your time will be well spent supporting the development and education of local children through up to 4 weeks volunteering in Maun. This experience also includes a 4 day safari to the stunning Okavango Delta and a week of high adrenaline activities in Victoria Falls in Zambia.
How does this project make a difference?
- Supporting a vulnerable community: Due to high rates of HIV infection and an increasing population of children, Maun is a town awash with children needing support and care. Volunteers help out in small day care centres for children aged between 2 and 6 years old helping to teach English and maths, playing games and singing as well as helping to feed the kids during meal times.
- Building a brighter future: Botswana has one of the highest levels of education in Africa and by providing young children with a foot up in early life there is a bright future awaiting them. Volunteers help to create this spring board for their future success.
Local home stay accommodation: During the time spent in Maun, volunteers will live with a local family, helping in the day to day running of the house and providing an invaluable cultural exchange, furthering your understanding of the country and helping to financially support local families. We believe in experiencing all corners of the world but with this comes the responsibility of looking after the world. Moreover, travelling responsible is about us ensuring that everything we do helps in to support the countries from which we all derive so much enjoyment.
We offer our travellers extremely unique experiences, designed specifically with the goal of exploring a country as it is meant to be, getting off the beaten track and pitching in with a helping hand on worthwhile and sustainable volunteer projects. By travelling this way our explorers make a lasting difference to a community and take away new memories, perspectives and attitudes towards the world and a true knowledge of the country they have visited, feeling more like an adopted local than a tourist.
Full pre departure information is provided to travellers before going to ensure they can maximise their positive impact, minimise any negative impacts and be prepared for the experience ahead of them. Any volunteering involving working with children requires a CRB check that we carry out before departure. On arrival travellers are met at the airport before attending a thorough orientation ensuring everyone is fully prepared to get stuck in. We work hard to ensure that everything we offer uses locally employed staff, local transport, suppliers and accommodation to maximise responsibility towards the world as we travel.
We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
