Conservation volunteering in Australia
How Conservation volunteering in Australia makes a difference
Environment
On this project volunteers work with the largest practical conservation organisation in Australia and help to conserve the natural species of Australia. Through ongoing efforts and support from international volunteers this project helps to remove invader species and protect the indigenous ones whilst educating future generations. With over 30 years of activity this project is vital to the conservation work in Australia. Their huge efforts benefits in the following areas: land management, climate change, species preservation and community wellbeing. The results speak for themselves, as in the last decade alone, over 10 million trees have been planted by participants, and in 2011 participants delivered over 800,000 hours of conservation volunteering plus completed over 8,500 wildlife surveys.
Green initiatives are always promoted and pursued by the project no matter how small. Recycling and reducing energy consumption are small examples of practises the project takes seriously and shares with visiting tourists and volunteers.
Community
This project engages with the local communities and understands that without addressing local issues conserving species is a difficult task. The community is always involved in projects and education sessions, particularly at local schools, are a regular occurrence to ensure that all ages of the community are aware of the challenges the environment faces and plant the seed early to encourage sustainable and responsible behaviour.
Accommodation used while volunteers are on their project is locally owned and key members of the community are involved with all activities. In this way the local economy benefits from the presence of volunteers alongside the natural environment. We encourage for example that volunteer money is spent in local business, be it though buying food, tours or other tourist attractions and that any donations in terms of tools or kit to the project are purchased locally rather than from their host country.
In its 30 years of existence this organisation has grown from a small scale local environment group to one of national and global significance. It was one of the first - and still leading - community-based environmental volunteering organisations in Australia.
