Alpujarras mountain biking holiday, Spain
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We have a 'leave no trace' policy on our mountain biking holidays to ensure that our impact in these beautiful regions will not have a negative effect on this fragile environment. During this tour our guides will pass on their knowledge and explain the reasons behind our environmental policy and the ‘leave no trace’ ethos.
During your stay with us in the Alpujarran region we are fortunate enough to be able to fill our water bottles in natural water fountains that can be found in all villages that we pass through, we also encourage you to use the same refillable bottle for the duration of your trip, to save on plastic waste. In addition to this, the accommodation you will be staying in during this tour is a renovated 300 year-old traditional Moorish style residence fitted with energy-saving lamps throughout, wood burning stove and plastic and glass recycling facilities.
Our food on this trip is prepared locally by a village chef, who prepares a mix of local and other recognisable European dishes from locally grown produce where possible. When other products are required the chef will visit the local market or village shop, so even if produce is not locally grown, the local community will benefit directly.
Damage to the environment: Our guides will explain to you how fragile the environment is that you are passing through, how best to preserve it and that all your waste should be taken out and disposed of in the correct manner when we return to civilisation.
Community
The Sierra Nevada area in the south of Spain is one of the most picturesque regions of this stunning country, but it is not an affluent region, unfortunately natural beauty does not always bring employment and wealth. When we travel in the Sierra Nevada region we are conscious to travel as responsibly and environmentally friendly as possible.
During your time in Spain you will be serviced by a carefully selected group of locals; our driver, a village chef cooks your evening meals, our guide who lives in the village, and we eat our lunches in a hand-picked selection of working men’s cafes in an array of communities dotted on the hillsides of the Trevelez gorge. In addition to this, the accommodation you will be staying in during this tour is a renovated 300 year-old traditional Moorish style residence fitted with energy-saving lamps throughout, wood burning stove and we are required to recycle our plastic and glass.
Our local guide is a well-respected member of the community, for many reasons, mostly for his commitment to spreading the tourism wealth around the valley. As a result, during your week in Spain you will not visit the same café twice. He also works closely with land owners to encourage land access and to ensure the sustainability of the paths we ride during this tour, by educating land owners on trail maintenance.
Working with communities in this way has a huge knock-on effect on the communities themselves, and on tourism in the area; not just on the one or two people directly linked to our company, but all the villages that make up this interesting and unique valley deep in the Sierra Nevada, Spain.
