Responsible tourism: Gozo scuba diving short break, Malta

Our environment and its safeguarding for future generations has become one of the salient aspects in the tourism trade, which in turn is one of the most important industries of the Maltese islands. “The eco-certification of our hotel was the logical next step for us,” said Noel Attard, General Manager of the Hotel. “Being the countryside resort that we are, an environmentally friendly approach to tourism comes naturally. We want to concentrate on having sustainable tourism, which blends in perfectly with the vision of Eco Gozo. Sustainable tourism is not just about reducing energy, water and adopting a waste management system but it is mostly about offering the guests visiting the Maltese Islands the authenticity, culture and heritage which Malta and Gozo stand for.”

The Hotel is displaying the eco certification logo are complying with a detailed set of criteria that are designed to improve their environmental performance, such as environmental and waste management, procurement of energy and water, air quality, noise, building and green areas, local culture and information dissemination. A private investment by Hotel will make this reputable hotel as the first hotel worldwide to stop using chlorine to treat tap water. This is due to the introduction of a new process that uses an ecological product which improves the quality of drinking water, which has been integrated into the water treatment system of the hotel.

The Hotel has been concentrating increasingly on the marketing of the island’s ecological aspects, such as offering country walks and rides, and experiences at local farms where guests are encouraged to partake in the daily routines, showcasing agro tourism, and introducing innovative vacation concepts such as painting holidays on the islands. Gozo has a lot to offer and we must continuously underlie its potential as an eco island, promoting it for its richness in history, culture, traditions, tranquility, its people and the environment. All in all this is what sustainable tourism is all about".

We try to use local products and suppliers as much as possible. Beside this we are aiming to let our guests breath in the original flavour of Gozo with all it's specialities, traditions and cultural aspects.

In February 2012 the hotel opened a new wine bar concept – La Caverna –
where the name reflects the story of “The Cave of the Old Man” dating back to 1583 found in Mgarr ix-Xini in Gozo which established the links of Gozo to a culture and history of wines. For a long time the story was just a century old legend until a couple of years ago the excavations showed many wine and oil presses in the valley, with similar wine presses found in Italy. The new wine bar revolves around the world of wines where our guests can just relax in the cosy ambience of an Italian style enoteca sipping through an extensive wine list presenting 300 different types of wines.
