The trip takes you through the Salar de Uyuni, a vast, barren salt flat at an altitude of over 3,60mm, and the Eduardo Avaroa National Park, a lake-filled desert on the border with Chile and Argentina. You will visit colonial cities, explore indigenous Aymara culture and experience the chaotic street life of La Paz – perched on the roof of the world. You’ll travel through lunar-like landscapes, the breathtaking altitude offering exceptionally clear air and incredible light. Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Photography holiday in The Andes, Bolivia

Environment

We only work with licensed ground operators who work with local guides, natural reserves and archaeological sites in the highlands and Amazon regions of Latin America.

Most natural reserves will ask that each visitor pays directly, when entering the reserve, the admission fee, which will contribute in maintaining the reserve, building new roads and hire local staff who will look after the site and wildlife. Also, if a trip includes visits to pre-colonial sites, the fees paid to each archaeological site or museum go directly to each project.

As a small tour operator we encourage our customers to follow the guidelines of our travellers’ code of conduct, where we emphasise waste management and local consumption at destination.

Our ground operators are aware of our interest in making sure water usage and waste management are of high standards. We encourage clients to give us feedback at their return or if they want when at destination, if our ground operators are not compliant with responsible practices.

We aim to utilise fewer printed marketing and communication materials, encouraging customers to order the online version of the catalogue and ensure every experience we offer has enough online information.

Community

Our community based experiences directly benefit the communities and are generally run by the communities itself who work in partnership with local operators.

When you decide to travel with us you will be contributing to the local communities directly. However, although most of our destinations need to be reached by air travel, you can decide to offset your carbon footprints.

Among a crumbling colonial legacy, Bolivia is striving to secure a more prosperous future while holding on to the clothing, music, religions and even languages that are firmly rooted in the majority of its people whose ancestors pre-date the Spanish conquistadors. The high-altitude capital, La Paz, is an extraordinary place of bustle and colour providing a fascinating gateway to the country. Street vendors ply their trade at every corner and most women still wear traditional dress and ubiquitous bowler hats.

We will put you in touch with local cultures and so you are able to learn more about the area’s history, its current way of living and how traditions are maintained. We ask you to respect the archaeological sites, natural reserves and the communities you will visit by trying to avoid wasting water, throwing litter or damaging the environment.

80% of our experiences include tours to local communities and the aim of each is to show the way of living of these communities or local projects.

Our activity-based experiences, fitness and wellness vacations have a tailor made approach where we suggest and offer activities that will enable our customers to travel to communities and rural areas where there will be more opportunities to learn about its needs and visit with local people. We aim to organise tailor made responsible tourism experiences in Bolivia using our extensive local contacts and knowledge. We work directly with local operators, who have an emphasis of using of locally produced ingredients in cooking meals.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Going in the silver mine in potosi to see the Tio (devil statue)

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Prepare for the altitude at one time or another all three of us passengers were sick in most part due to the altitude.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes we ate at local restraints and cafes, and used three different local drivers over the course of the trip

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

On the ground in Bolivia was great, only trouble was with the tours office in London, they gave each of us three passengers different information, causing the two ladies on the trip to share a room for a few nights even though they had paid a single supplement.

Read the operator's response here:

Dear Craig,

Thank you very much for submitting a review via the Responsible Travel website. We’re delighted that you enjoyed the trip, particularly the silver mine in Potosi, and that you felt that the tour was conducted in a socially responsible way as that is something that we always strive for when planning our itineraries.

We do occasionally face communication challenges with the hotels in the Uyuni and desert region due to its isolation, and it was exacerbated in this instance as the region was overbooked because of the Easter break with many locals visiting these destinations at the last minute. We have resolved the issue with the passengers in question and have refunded them the value of their single supplement for the two nights they had to share.

We regret this happened; Bolivia offers you crowd-free experiences and for that reason it remains authentic and unique, however there are always small challenges in terms of logistics when at destination. We appreciate your feedback and are very glad to hear you enjoyed the tour.

Thank you
Bibiana and Elfie
