Gorilla safari in Rwanda
The most exciting part of the holiday was seeing the Mountain Gorillas in their natural environment at very close hand - literally right next to them when they decided the quickest way to the next part of the forest was to walk right through our small group. (more)Diane Rowe

Memorable parts? Driving with Makoros (traditional wood boot) to our wild camping in the Okavango Delta observed by hippos. Tips? Take thermal underwear with you when going on this trip in Africa's winter. The temperature at night was sub zero and morning/evenings were cold as well. Local benefits? Memorable parts? Aaah! Memorable parts? The people in the group, including the guide and nomad family that we hiked with. Such good spirits. Tips? Bring a towel, wet wipes, books. There is time to savor the afternoons. Local benefits? Yes, I felt that our visit did help the nomad family and mule handlers. Memorable parts? Seeing five out of six possible types of lemur in the first National Park we visited. Tips? Be prepared for anything! We had a ferry crossing that grounded us on a sandbank, put us on a tiny passenger boat and involved a long hot dusty walk through a rubbish dump before arriving at a restaurant serving Haut Cuisine at local prices. Memorable parts? "Camping" out in the wilds of Africa. The quote marks are because it was the most comfortable camping I have ever experienced. The tents were bigger than our bedroom, the food was incredible and the hot, private in-tent camp shower so refreshing. But we were truly out in the wild and could hear baboons near our camp and find elephant dung behind the tents. Tips? You don't need to bring boots or other rugged travel gear.
