Cyprus walking holiday, North Cyprus
Memorable parts? Difficult to pick out a single event. The magnificent, tall, yellow wild fennel; the carpet of cyclemen; the single Sufi performing his "whirling dervish" trance; the view of sea and mountains from the terrace outside my room; the scent of orange blossom in the hotel gardens was intoxicating; our guide, Christina, was so enthusiastic, knowledgable and helpful. Her fluent Turkish was impressive and she certainly gave me an insight into the Greek/Turkish actions and their effects... (more)Amore Robinson

From 40 per apartment per night (sleeps 2)
Cyprus traditional villa accommodation
Memorable parts? Tochni was one of the most beautiful villages in the area. It suited us because it was very quiet. Renovating old buildings provides an immediate atmosphere to the holiday and is much better than staying in a new apartment. Tips? It is centrally located, but you still have to be prepared to travel if you want to make the most of the holiday. Local benefits? Yes it did benefit local people, and in the respect of renovating old buildings it did minimize the... (more)John Williams

North Cyprus walking holiday
Memorable parts? The landscape - the mountains are breathtaking! We also saw goats in trees! Tips? Bring wipes, a roll of toilet paper and candy or alcohol to share (if you want to.) Local benefits? The trip employs local men and they always gave empty water jugs to the villagers. It would be nice if we could help with the litter issue in some of the remote areas... Overall rating? It was a memorable, challenging and fabulous trip. (more)Maria Falgoust

From 48 - 120 per apartment per night
Limassol self catering accommodation in Cyprus
Memorable parts? The tranquil position of our accommodation at Kontoyiannas House in Kalavasos. Set within a pleasant & friendly village in the valley and only minutes drive from one of the loveliest beaches we discovered in Cyprus. Tips? To make the most of the self-catering accommodation including the bbq since the variety of menus in the island's taverns & restaurants is generally very limited. Kontoyiannas House would also be great to rent for a group of families - using all... (more)Nicole Mouton

Excellent. A really relaxing break - I hope to make a return trip. Very encouraging to see a smaller-scale family hotel; well-organised, clean, comfortable, friendly and beautiful, with a positive impact on its local environment. (more)Judy Powell

Cyprus travel info

There is another side to Cyprus than the infamous Agia Napa resort that you can discover with! The people of Cyprus owe their individuality and warmth to the fact that they are the product of an amazingly colorful history. This sun drenched island has been at the crossroads of world events for centuries. Roman, Byzantine, Greek and British influences have all had a bearing on life in Cyprus.

Cyprus is an island of beauty and contrasts. Cool, pine-clad mountains are a complete scene-change after golden sun-kissed beaches; tranquil, timeless villages are in striking contrast to modern cosmopolitan towns; luxurious beachside hotels can be exchanged for large areas of natural, unspoilt countryside; yet in Cyprus all distances are easily manageable, mostly on modern roads and highways.

For the responsible traveller the restoration of traditional houses in Cyprus villages - often referred to as agrotourism - provides lovely and traditional places to stay which also benefits the local economy.
