Florida family vacations

What does responsible travel recommend?

Florida family vacations in the Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel couldn’t be easier – miles of soft, sandy beach; wildlife refuges to explore; canoeing and kayaking; and interactive museums for when they need a break from the sun – all quickly and easily accessible by boat, road or bus. The weather is glorious, the water is warm and the food; come on, this is America we’re talking about, it’s not likely you’ll struggle tempting them to eat a burger bigger than their own head. The lifestyle promotes learning, nature and health, and there are miles of biking and hiking tracks on which to burn the calories off. It’s all about balance.

Things to do in Fort Myers & Sanibel with kids

FLORIDA FAMILY VACATIONS

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
This sanctuary is a 13,000-acre forest with a 3km boardwalk that snakes through mammoth cypress trees, alligator holes and lakes where brightly coloured wading birds feast. It’s brilliant for hiking and nature trails and has a fully interactive and innovative centre of exhibits that explains what you’ll find in the forest and why.
Kayaking
The Great Calusa Blueway, is a marked, 300km-long canoe and kayak trail that meanders through coastal waters, calm bays and sheltered mangrove creeks. Organise equipment and lessons for kids of all ages and try your hand at standup paddle boarding or kite surfing too.
Sanibel Sea School
Sea Schools for kids are fun ways for kids to learn about nature and the waters of Sanibel and Captiva. Kids get to spot dolphins, search for crabs, discover beautiful shells and learn about the abundant wading birds that live off the islands. Fun, educational courses are available for adults and children for either half or full days.

Tips for families

responsible travel asks the experts

Lee Rose, communications manager at The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel, shares his thoughts on the region for families: “There are diverse nature and history-oriented attractions and activities for families to enjoy across Fort Myers and Sanibel. Natural sand beaches and warm waters provide the perfect backdrop for relaxing and reconnecting with the kids. The Gulf of Mexico and many other waterways offer first-rate kayaking, along with manatee and dolphin viewing and Sanibel Island offers 25 miles (40km) of designated bike paths, a great way to enjoy the tropical scenery and wildlife.  Attractions such as the Imaginarium Science Center and the Sanibel Sea School are great for children and families.”
Leah Biery, from our supplier, Sanibel Sea School, shares her thought on the Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel for families: “A visit to Sanibel and Fort Myers is a must for any family. Our shallow, warm waters provide the perfect setting for kids and adults of all ages to enjoy the ocean, and our area is home to an abundance of unique wildlife species you won't find together anywhere else - river otters, bobcats, alligators, roseate spoonbills, manatees, and dolphins, to name a few! It's easy to rent bikes of all sizes, with child seats or trailers, which is the perfect way to explore together. All ages will enjoy activities like shelling, fishing, and boating, and our resorts and restaurants are very family-friendly.”
