Wild food cookery weekend in Scotland
The most memorable and exciting part of the holiday was drinking nettle beer as the sun went down on the Saturday night. We'd had a busy day digging, foraging and cooking, so seeing it all come together at the end of the day with a crackling fire and that beautiful view of the valley below was truly memorable. (more)

Learn to dive in Sardinia, Italy
One of the most memorable parts of my trip was a snorkelling excursion along the Golfo di Orosei. Along the way, as we sailed past all the stunning beaches and caves, Cinzia gave us plenty of information about the geography and nature along the coast, but all in a very humorous and fun way. Once in the crystal clear water we were lucky enough to see a couple of weird and wonderful creatures. (more)

Learn something new holidays

Why do we travel? To take a break? To get some sun? To see the great sights and sounds? To get away? Any of those sound like you?

What about travelling to learn something new? Some of you might scoff; believing that ‘learning’ is something that ought to be confined to the classroom. We cling to the idea that a holiday is a chance to switch off, not switch on. But recent studies have shown that, despite your urge to leave your brain at home when you get ready to take a holiday, travel is actually good for the brain. No, not because it gives it the chance to rest, but because it stimulates your creativity.

In fact, some might even say that travel makes you smarter. Aside from the obvious reasons, like the fact that you might pick up a few words you could barely comprehend before, or extend your geography skills beyond a trip to the shops, travel expands your potential to think creatively. The act of getting away from home allows you the most literal chance to take a look at things from a new perspective – perhaps from beneath the canopy of your treehouse accommodation, or from the under the sunshine on the other side of the equator.

How many times have you told someone they needed to ‘get some distance’ in order to solve a problem? Advised someone to ‘take a step back’? It’s no coincidence that we associate the act of walking away from something with being able to think clearly, to allow the cogs to whir in a new way. If travel makes you smarter, if going on holiday is actually the perfect setting for getting creative – what do we do with all that excess knowledge? It stands to reason that taking a holiday might be the perfect opportunity to put our brains to use on exciting new skills, to direct our refreshed and relaxed minds to picking up some new tricks to show off back home, or maybe even plug in to our destination?

So, before you put that brilliant mind of yours on hold for two weeks of mindlessness, check out our selection of ‘learning something new’ holidays, designed to nurture your creative juices and, not only give you a new skill to brag about, but help out the local community as well.
