Kerala luxury holiday, India
Memorable parts? The homestays were particularly enjoyable, allowing us some insight into everyday life in a way that can be difficult to experience as a tourist. Our hosts were warm, genuine, entertaining and thoughtful people who put a great deal of effort into ensuring that we got the best from our trip. It felt very sad each time we had to move on! Also, Keralan food is wonderful, though 3 home cooked meals a day can have a serious impact on your waistline (perhaps we should have refused... (more)Liz Livingstone

To pick one would be impossible - but how about visiting and dancing with new friends from a Lobi village while listening to their incredible music (one of the "instruments" was a shovel) or following an elephant's footprints, then hearing him, particularly the sound of his ears flapping, before seeing him. Memorable parts? The first village stay on the hill tribe trek - we were the first group to stay in this village, and the kids were so excited to see us that I think we became a free babysitting service to the whole village for the entire night! Memorable parts? When I was marking out straight lines of the village's football pitch, the local community joined in to help. it showed me that little things can make a difference and put smile's on people's faces. Tips? Just go and throw yourself fully into the whole experience, the projects you help with and the people you share the house with. Also just relax, things are at a much slower pace so timings can be a issue, but its not really a big deal when you can go look outside... (more)James Bloomfield

Maasai Mara safari camp in Kenya
Memorable parts? Arriving in the village - the warmth of the welcome, the pleasure of staying in a manyatta (mud hut). Also the activities are wonderful - walks amongst the zebra, milking cows, firing bows and arrows, lighting fires. Really good fun!! Tips? I went for 4 nights - 2 in the camp and 2 in the village. The camp is great - paraffin lamps, good food and comfy beds. You can get the lie of the land and start to get to know your hosts. But don't miss out on staying in the village... (more)Helena Smith
