Mauritius travel information

East of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius and its small island dependencies stands on what was once a land bridge between Asia and Africa, its significance as a historic trading post reflected in the diversity of its peoples and cultural heritage. Surrounded by coral reefs, the islands are of volcanic origin and heavy rainfall contributes to the fertility of the red tropical soils, such as those of the main island's broad fertile plain on which sugar cane flourishes.

The rich coastal waters offer windsurfing, fishing and diving activities, while the national parks and reserves provide fascinating walks and treks through magnificent coastal and mountain scenery. Pamplemousses Gardens are renowned for their large collection of indigenous and exotic flora, while the mountainous terrain of Riviere Noire is also rich in birdlife.
