Our World Responsible Tourism Awards

World Responsible Tourism Awards

Why we're not accepting submissions in 2017

For the first time in 2017 we will not be accepting submissions or giving out any global Awards – instead to tie into the UN International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, this year will be focussing on responsible tourism's contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

We will be inviting previous winners of the Awards to demonstrate to our panel how much they have contributed to the SDGs, and as part of the opening of World Responsible Tourism Day 2017 at WTM London in November will be showcasing the successes of the most inspirational businesses live on stage.

We are trying to play an active role in creating and encouraging a more caring tourism industry. We have three programs that we focus on in addition to our business, the first is our Trip for a Trip scheme, the second our activism and the third is our World Responsible Tourism Awards scheme, which we founded in 2004.

About our Awards

Our vision for the Awards, which are open to any organisation anywhere in the world, is to surprise and inspire tourists and the tourism industry by what it is possible to achieve with Responsible Tourism, and to shine a light on the best of the best.

Our Awards rest on a simple principle - that all types of tourism, from niche to mainstream, can and should be organised in a way that preserves, respects and benefits destinations and local people. We want to celebrate the shining stars of responsible tourism - the individuals, organisations and destinations working innovatively with local cultures, communities and biodiversity.

Over the past 13 years we've given Awards to 376 incredible people and organisations, after a rigorous Judging process Chaired by Professor Harold Goodwin. Media partners have included the Metro, Times, Telegraph, National Geographic Traveller (UK) Magazine and TTG.

Following requests from destinations around the world for support in creating their own local awards schemes, since 2015 we have supported three regional awards schemes, part of the World Responsible Tourism Awards family; The African Responsible Tourism Awards, Irish Responsible Tourism Awards and Indian Responsible Tourism Awards.
Getting to know more about each other remains one of the most important hopes for the peaceful future of the planet. If we are really to understand each other better, then we need to be reminded to travel carefully and thoughtfully, listening to people along the way and respecting the world we are privileged to travel through. The Responsible Tourism Awards are one of the most important ways in which we can understand how to travel better.
