Near Mari we had a tyre blow out on the bus and had to stop to get it fixed. Within minutes the whole village had turned out to see what was going on and wanted photos taking and to talk to us. We were only 10 miles from the Iraq boarder but the people could not have been any more friendly. In some ways it was the high spot of the holiday.
(more)Absolutely first class. From a tourist point of view, Syria does not deserve its reputation. The people are charming and very welcoming... The ruins can be truly impressive. Damascus and Aleppo are cosmopolitan cities.
(more)The most memorable parts were wandering through the souks in Damascus, through the deserted ruins of Palmyra at dusk and dawn, Petra by night (in spite of the crowds) and standing on a red dune in Wadi Rum in the rain. (more)Petra was fantastic the balloon trip over Cappadocia was incredible the castles and Roman remains were all if not more than we were expecting. (more)Highlights were bumbling through the beautiful Middle Eastern desert on a large yellow truck with new friends, climbing Mount Sinai by moonlight and seeing the sun rise from the summit. (more)For me, most the memorable part was visiting Crak des Chevalier crusaders' Castle highlighted by a small boy singing his prayers in the fantastic acoustics in the mosque/former church.
