Tailor made holiday in Brazil
We had a morning horse riding down a flooded area at the start, with our feet touching the water, and then across more open country; the wild flowers and birds were amazing. A 5.30 am canoe trip which was magical, so quiet and peaceful, seeing the beauty of the sun rising and hearing the early morning bird song; the canoe being so quiet we were able to get very close to birds before they flew. Later that afternoon we visited a fishing village down the river and were invited into their one room house... (more)Harvey Bromley

Peru tailormade holiday
Memorable parts? Peru is a wonderful destination with so much more to offer than just the iconic Machu Picchu - all thoroughly recommended. Tips? As we did, do the circuit in an anti-clockwise direction, so that you finish up with Macchu Pichu as the jewel in the crown, but don't miss out Arequipa and Colca Canyon. Local benefits? In a relatively poor country where tourism is so important to the economy, every aspect of such a trip benefits the people somehow - even paying... (more)Paul Mors

Memorable parts? The homestays were particularly enjoyable, allowing us some insight into everyday life in a way that can be difficult to experience as a tourist. Our hosts were warm, genuine, entertaining and thoughtful people who put a great deal of effort into ensuring that we got the best from our trip. It felt very sad each time we had to move on! Also, Keralan food is wonderful, though 3 home cooked meals a day can have a serious impact on your waistline (perhaps we should have refused... (more)Liz Livingstone

Tailor made Rajasthan tour, India
Memorable parts? History and culture. I enjoyed the amazing hotels we stayed in that were beautiful locations and historical. Tips? Due to distance between locations, ensure there are two nights at every hotel. There is significant time spent driving (in a car) between each location. If flying from Delhi during December / January be aware of fog delaying / cancelling flights. Local benefits? We visited local communities (e.g. Bishnoi, Samode) but not sure how it benefitted... Memorable parts? Walking in the hills in North Vetnam, really connected with the people off the tourist trails. Stunning. Tips? Be prepared for simple accommodation and reasonably hard walking. A couple of the guides, especially Johnnie in Beijing and Susan in chengdu engaged with the children and helped make our time in those cities very enjoyable. we loved that logistics were taken care of by our guides n drivers. Find out more about tailor made cultural holidays by reading these articles.

Few of us enjoy the feeling of sticking out like a sore thumb when we are on holiday. We giggle about the strange habits of overseas tourists here in the UK, but maybe it’s them laughing at us when we are away on holiday? However sometimes cultural faux pas are no laughing matter. Although our intentions might be good some of our behaviour can inadvertently cause great offence in destinations. For example, that little pink mini skirt which looks great in Brighton or Miami can, when worn away from the beach in Muslim countries, cause offence. The same types of culture clashes happen in conservative Christian communities in Polynesia, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Beyond causing offence to individual people tourism can impact on the culture in entire destinations. The tourism industry packages up and sanitises religious rituals, dress, ethnic rites and festivals to conform to tourist expectations. Once a destination begins to see itself through the eyes of tourists it begins to lose its sense of itself and its identity (and pretty quickly the reason why tourists came in the first place).
