Camping tours of Western America
Memorable parts? There were lots!! But Yellowstone NP does stands out. Tips? Go for it, don't think twice, you'll love it, if you really love the outdoors. Local benefits? Yes, by using the campsites and local guides. Overall rating? Great: best locations of the West US. (more)Theresa Farrugia

Family camping holiday in America
Memorable parts? Yosemite and Grand Canyon National Parks, walking amoungst the Hoodoos in Bryce Canyon and sleeping under the stars in the Navajo Tribal Lands. The children had the most wonderful time paddling in rivers, playing in the sand, climbing up rocks at the Kodachrome campsite, riding bikes in Yosemite and following the geology time-line in the Grand Canyon. Tips? Mostly don't bother to pitch the tent - just sleep under the stars! Take as little baggage as possible - you... (more)Helen Perry

National Parks hiking holiday in America
Memorable parts? There were numerous memorable moments during the whole two week holiday due to the ever changing landscape covered by the trip.We covered nearly 2000 miles in the comfortable people carrier and the views, scenery and walks we superb and not too taxing. The first view of the Grand Canyon was of course stunning but for me the mountain views in Yosemite were breathtakingly beautiful ,the walk along the Panorama trail back to Curry village was awe inspiringly spectacular and the... Alaska holiday, classic camping tour
It was an amazing experience. I fell in love with the place and the group I travelled with and our guide were super!! Which made the trip even more memorable. The itinerary was great and it was all very well organised and hassle free. (more)Maria Sarda
The most memorable part was the optional extra activity of kayaking among icebergs off the Columbia glacier out of Valdez, Alaska. (more)Mary Jane Mahony
Go! Beautiful landscape, glaciers, range of outdoor activities, whales, grizzly bears and salmon galore (latter to eat) way more than make up for long drives and changeable weather. Would love to go back. (more)Karen Bennett

California, Nevada and Arizona holiday
Memorable parts? The time spent in Monument Valley was probably the most memorable for me, despite the (lack of) facilities for our overnight camping. Also quiet times in Arches National Park and an early morning walk by myself along the rim of the Grand Canyon. I loved being with the group, but having personal space sometimes is important for me. Memories of my fellow travellers will last. We had fun. Tips? Be prepared for anything, go with the flow as far as you can and know there... (more)Lesley Hale

Alaska and Yukon classic camping tour
Memorable parts? We travelled a great distance, saw tons of great scenery and was able to do a variety of activities so I can't really say that one thing stands out however Dawson City (both times) was great. Tips? Bring a bug hat/jacket and some good bug spray. Bring a variety of warm clothes (e.g. mitts, wool hat...) even in the summer months - you never know what the temperature will be like. It really is an active tour and to be ready for this. You do no have to be an athlete... (more)Mary Ellen Ruddell

Small group camping holiday in America
Memorable parts? Each new place visited on the itinerary. The variety was brilliant. Tips? Check the age range of your fellow travellers, if you are not among the first to book. I was with an excellent group ranging from 23 to 63! Local benefits? Yes, certainly. Recycling was handled extremely well and local people were used in the one place where it was possible and mattered, i.e. Monument Valley and the Navajo Indians. Overall rating? Excellent. Family holiday to National Parks in America
Hiking up to Angel's Landing in Zion National Park, horse-back riding in Utah, seeing my eleven year olds hike 9 miles in 35 degrees without complaining were the most memorable moments. (more)Rebecca Hill
One of the best holidays I have ever had!! It was a worry wondering how we were going to get on with our travelling companions but in fact they enhanced the entire holiday experience. (more)Amanda Taylor
The National Parks are very well managed - and quite spectacular - but the best bit was the horse riding at the 'mountain ranch' - good horses, well looked after and an excellent evening ride catered for all abilities. (more)Christopher Hawker

Alaska wilderness lodge
Our vacation was a dream come true. Owner, Keith has built the whole place by hand with logs he found on the nearby beaches. What he has done is remarkable and his wife Randi adds the special touches that make the place really feel like being home. (more)Lynn Kelly
Our cabin was comfortable, the view from our bed was to die for!!! Snow covered mountains on each side, ocean in between, dolphins and otters playing in the cove, islands and a steaming volcano in the distance. (more)Phyllis Sarayusa

Alaska adventure holiday, salmon run
Memorable parts? It's difficult to pinpoint just one moment, as the whole stay in Alaska was wonderful from start to finish. Seeing all the wildlife, in Denali National Park (bears, caribous, wolves...),when on a boat in the Kenai fjords (orcas, sea lions, humpback whales...), but also just when travelling casually on a road, was fantastic: they're just part of everyday life in Alaska. Having the feeling that you are not in an overcrowded holiday spot was also a big "plus" to me, you are... (more)Bettina Bernhardt

Texas small group holiday, America
Memorable parts? What an amazing trip! My favourite part of the tour was rafting down the Rio Grande river in the warm sunshine and stopping off en route for some wild swimming. Having said that though, every single day of the trip was exhilarating and there was such a wide range of activities and experiences that the nine days went by really quickly in a blur of excitement. Big Bend National Park was stunning and it was really refreshing to be somewhere so remote and wild. Our guide was... (more)Elfie Burgess

Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyon holiday
Excellent, great bunch of fellow travellers (tour was full at 13). Our tour guide, Dan, was great and made the holiday work really. He was always available to us and coped well with our different needs/wants and the unpredictable weather. (more)Wendy Pountain
The most memorable parts were my first view of Bryce Canyon; trekking down to Cedar Ridge in the Grand Canyon. (more)DC Gibson
Hiking through Bryce Canyon with snow capping the rocks. One group member said as we hiked down amongst the structures "We need to invent new superlatives". It was stunning...Fantastic, recommended. Great tour guide from this tour operator. (more)Melanie Atkins

Alaska adventure cruise
Memorable parts? It has to be the Un-Cruise Adventure (though the road trip was pretty good as well). Tips? As they recommend, take plenty of layers and wet weather clothing (activities take place regardless of weather so you need the right stuff for hiking & kayaking, as well as watching the scenery and wildlife from the boat. Don't worry about "evening clothes" - most people only changed in the evenings if their day clothes got wet, and then jeans are fine. Local benefits? Having... (more)Lavinia Martins

West Coast tours in America
Memorable parts? There were so many memorable parts of this holiday. I wanted to see San Francisco, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. This tour provided me with the opportunity and so much more. The other places visited were unknown to me but they all turned out to be fantastic with stunning scenery and landscape. Even Las Vegas was memorable but two nights in the place was quite enough for me. If I had to pick one memory, it would have to be Yosemite which everyone should see. Tips? The... (more)Paul Rimmer

Alaska wildlife cruise
Memorable parts? The whole trip was outstanding from start to finish. The boat was great - large enough to give everyone space but small enough to be personal. The crew were exception and had the holiday, Brian the very experience skipper who had time to talk to everyone and was extremely knowledgeable, Steve nothing was too much trouble, Annie the cook who provided first class food made fresh everyday and Danny the naturalist who was knowledgeable and great fun. And finally the wildlife... (more)Sarah Taylor

Family holiday to America
Memorable parts? The grand canyon and the camping and the group; the contrast between Las Vegas and the national parks. Tips? Need to be fairly fit and not too fussy on food. Local benefits? To a certain extent. Overall rating? The holiday was basically as indicated in the information sent. However, we felt the guide with us had rather too much to do. We felt that it would have been better for us and him if someone had shared the driving and other duties of his... (more)Catherine Hughes

National Parks holidays in America
Memorable parts? There were so many highlights! Perhaps the most memorable was the sunset in Monument Valley, the light made the rock glow. The tour leader was also excellent - knowledgeable, enthusiastic, but reactive to the views and wishes of the travellers, anticipating our preferences. Tips? Be prepared for extremes of temperature - cool and cloudy in San Francisco, extremely hot and dry in Vegas. Local benefits? Clearly using local accommodation, often not owned by... (more)Ian Roberts

USA travel information

One of the world's largest countries, the USA has enormous geographic and climatic diversity, with a corresponding breadth of flora and fauna. Its great rivers, mountains, deserts, forests and woodland offer plenty of opportunities for every imaginable outdoor activity, while the artistic and architectural heritage of the great cities present themselves as man-made wonders of the modern world. Less well known, and still relatively hidden from the casual observer, is the diversity of American Indian peoples.

Some tribes, such as the Pueblo Indians of the southwest, have welcomed visitors for decades; their rich decorative arts famous worldwide, but only recently have other tribes begun to explore the possibilities offered by tourism. Casinos and hotels from east to west have provided much-needed income for many tribes and reservations in recent decades, but innovative and imaginative Tribal Councils are now encouraging guests to learn more of Indian history, traditions and lifeways, and inviting visitors to explore with them the abundant American landscapes and wildlife.
