Cycling in Valencia Region
The combination of excellent surfaced roads in the interior of the Valencia region, plus many off road trails leading into the mountains, with excellent rural accommodation and sun practically guaranteed for most of the year make the Valencia region an ideal place for cycling.
Popular with international teams drawn by the fine weather in spring and autumn plus the empty well maintained roads, cyclists of all ages and ability can enjoy the splendid scenery and terrain to be found here.
Gary Neal - Mountain biker Mañana Mountain
"It’s an ideal place for mountain bikers from the rooky riders cutting their teeth right through to more experienced riders who want some triple x." [02:51]
Specialised holidays designed for cyclists are available in the three provinces, which range from a single day to a week or two week long tours mostly with accommodation in comfortably renovated casas rurales, farmhouses or self catering cottages in the smaller villages and towns. Many are led by expatriate guides, who know their region well and have a passionate affection for their area. Often based in small villages the cycle tour operators have become part of the community and provide the perfect way for visitors to get under the skin of village life and to meet local people. The majority of the rural roads running through the rich agricultural hinterland are of good quality and provide an excellent way to gain an insight into the production of wine, olives, almonds and oranges which are the staple produce of the Valencia region.
The Vias Verdes
(Green Way) dedicated cycle routes networks throughout the region offer opportunities for cyclists to discover dramatic and remote landscapes at their own pace.
The Alcoi Greenway in Alicante Province, and the Ojos Negros Greenway in Castellón province follow the routes of old railway tracks and with easy gradients provide a gentle way to explore.
The Alcoi Greenway passes through dense Mediterranean forests, with high viaducts giving splendid views over the Carrascal de la Font Roja Natural Park and the Ojos Negros Greenway follows an old narrow gauge mineral railway through the lovely rural country of the Alto Palancia between Sagunto and Teruel.
For off-road cyclists and mountain bikers the diversity of Valencia cycling offers challenges for all levels of ability, from the absolute beginner learning the skills of rough riding, to the more experienced rider who wants to push himself to the limit.
The long straight fire trails cut into the woodlands of the hills of Alicante for example, provide challenging climbs followed by adrenalin pumping descents along ancient mule trails and goat tracks which crisscross the hills. Athletes training for Ironman competitions and triathlons frequently come to the area to hone their fitness to peak levels. Cyclists can spend the entire day out in the country on the trails without seeing another person and with so many tracks available in such a wide variety of terrains, they will always be able to try something new and never have to repeat their routes.
The best time for cycling in Valencia is in the spring and autumn, when sun is practically guaranteed and when temperatures do not get too extreme. But even in winter there is usually plenty of sun and little rain which can make for ideal cycling conditions.

The BTT Centre in L'Orxa proposes a route that takes you through the mountains that surround this stretch of the River Serpis.
