Cycling in Valencia Region

Esplandade, Valencia. Photo by Valencia Tourist BoardThe combination of excellent surfaced roads in the interior of the Valencia region, plus many off road trails leading into the mountains, with excellent rural accommodation and sun practically guaranteed for most of the year make the Valencia region an ideal place for cycling.

Popular with international teams drawn by the fine weather in spring and autumn plus the empty well maintained roads, cyclists of all ages and ability can enjoy the splendid scenery and terrain to be found here.

"It’s an ideal place for mountain bikers from the rooky riders cutting their teeth right through to more experienced riders who want some triple x." [02:51]

Specialised holidays designed for cyclists are available in the three provinces, which range from a single day to a week or two week long tours mostly with accommodation in comfortably renovated casas rurales, farmhouses or self catering cottages in the smaller villages and towns. Many are led by expatriate guides, who know their region well and have a passionate affection for their area. Often based in small villages the cycle tour operators have become part of the community and provide the perfect way for visitors to get under the skin of village life and to meet local people. The majority of the rural roads running through the rich agricultural hinterland are of good quality and provide an excellent way to gain an insight into the production of wine, olives, almonds and oranges which are the staple produce of the Valencia region.

The Vias Verdes (Green Way) dedicated cycle routes networks throughout the region offer opportunities for cyclists to discover dramatic and remote landscapes at their own pace.

Cycling, Valencia. Photo by Valencia Tourist BoardThe Alcoi Greenway in Alicante Province, and the Ojos Negros Greenway in Castellón province follow the routes of old railway tracks and with easy gradients provide a gentle way to explore.

The Alcoi Greenway passes through dense Mediterranean forests, with high viaducts giving splendid views over the Carrascal de la Font Roja Natural Park and the Ojos Negros Greenway follows an old narrow gauge mineral railway through the lovely rural country of the Alto Palancia between Sagunto and Teruel.

For off-road cyclists and mountain bikers the diversity of Valencia cycling offers challenges for all levels of ability, from the absolute beginner learning the skills of rough riding, to the more experienced rider who wants to push himself to the limit.

The long straight fire trails cut into the woodlands of the hills of Alicante for example, provide challenging climbs followed by adrenalin pumping descents along ancient mule trails and goat tracks which crisscross the hills. Athletes training for Ironman competitions and triathlons frequently come to the area to hone their fitness to peak levels. Cyclists can spend the entire day out in the country on the trails without seeing another person and with so many tracks available in such a wide variety of terrains, they will always be able to try something new and never have to repeat their routes.

The best time for cycling in Valencia is in the spring and autumn, when sun is practically guaranteed and when temperatures do not get too extreme. But even in winter there is usually plenty of sun and little rain which can make for ideal cycling conditions.

Tune up your mountain bike and get ready to discover with us the best cycling routes around the Region of Valencia.

Enjoy your mountain bike in the best possible way
A BTT Centre is a freely accessible facility for mountain bikers, which has a network of well signposted routes and a series of equipment and additional biking support services. Whatever your level, our four BTT Centres will allow you to discover the most beautiful areas of the Region of Valencia and ride safely and comfortably.

The BTT Centres in the Region of Valencia offer:
  • A minimum of 100 kilometres of circuits, perfectly mapped out and signposted and designed to suit all levels of skill and experience.
  • A welcome point that offers you information and advice about the BTT Centre itself and the surrounding area. It also offers bicycle hire, parking areas, areas to wash and repair bicycles, showers and WCs, as well as first aid kits and facilities.
  • Information points dotted around the Region in different establishments and places, which provide information about the BTT Centre and the tourist resources in the area.
  • Quality standards established for the BTT Centre services and infrastructures, with the certification and backing of the Regional Department of Tourism.
Each BTT Centre offers various trails with different levels of difficulty, taking you through areas with little motorised traffic, generally on untarmacked paths. The trails are colour-coded according to their difficulty, distance, slope, biking possibilities and the condition of the surface. Most of the itineraries are circular and start at the welcome point. The routes are marked and interconnected, and can be followed either as single routes or combined for longer journeys.

The welcome and information points contain an informative map of the BTT Centre network of trails and indications of the different services offered. All the trails also have a comprehensive system of signposting and beacons with different signs all along the trail and especially at the intersections.

1) El Comtat BTT Centre
The BTT Centre in L'Orxa proposes a route that takes you through the mountains that surround this stretch of the River Serpis. Flanked by El Benicadell and the Sierra de Ador mountains, it flows into l'Estret de l'Infern, the only possible route out to the sea and the coastal plains. Here the valley closes in and the suggested itinerary follows anticlines to emerge from the valley either along the slopes, without losing altitude, or by going down towards other parallel valleys, such as the Vall del Vernissa, Vall de Gallinera or the Vall d'Alcalà.

The different routes vary in difficulty, ranging from easy trips suitable for all the family to itineraries that are very physically and technically demanding. All the routes are circular. Nine of them start and finish at the BTT centre in the Giner Factory, and the remaining three at the information point located in the municipality of Zorita.

Each of the routes is themed, and invites you to discover aspects of the cultural or natural heritage of Els Ports. So, for example, route 1 examines the importance of rivers in the area and their relationship with inhabitants. Route 7 takes you through the mountains to highlight the traditional trade of charcoal making.
