A bit disappointing really
Endangered wildlife conservation in South Africa
From

It is really hard to decide of many of the memorable and exciting experiences on this holiday which one stands out the most for me. Everyday it seemed that I saw something different in the bush, unexpectedly two male cheetahs appeared one morning, then there was the cheetah with her cub, there were rhinos and rhino babies, one interesting experience for me personally was a close encounter with an Assasin Bug(reduviidae, heteroptera). (more)Cathy Bisset
The most memorable part was all the time we spent in the bush - at least 10h per day. To see the other side of the safari - i.e. not being in a traditional tourist vehicle. (more)Karin van Volen
Amazing!! Words cannot describe this adventure- over 1500 photos taken and a million memories. (more)Emma Clifford

South Africa wildlife reserves conservation expedition

Memorable parts? Monitoring and tracking the wild dogs was a most memorable experience. We'd get up early in the morning and sit in the back of an open jeep and roar off to the last sighting. It was winter. It was cold. It didn't matter as it was a big adventure and the not knowing would we find them or not? Waiting and watching for the next time. Really great fun. Tips? For the winter, take lots of warm clothing layers as you can peel off as the weather warms up. Follow the list... (more)Keith Costelloe

Memorable parts? Going somewhere so completely different, being looked after by friendly, funny, knowledgeable and entertaining local staff. Sharing an experience like that with total strangers who become friends for life. Meeting the kids who will directly benefit from the work you are doing. Hosting a party and dinner for the village. Cramming all of us and all our kit into a truck for hours. The list is endless. Tips? Get in touch with the other volunteers in your group before... (more)Alexis Liming
Healthcare volunteering in Uganda

Memorable parts? When I was marking out straight lines of the village's football pitch, the local community joined in to help. it showed me that little things can make a difference and put smile's on people's faces. Tips? Just go and throw yourself fully into the whole experience, the projects you help with and the people you share the house with. Also just relax, things are at a much slower pace so timings can be a issue, but its not really a big deal when you can go look outside... (more)James Bloomfield
Shark conservation in South Africa
From
£1,207

Memorable parts? My last cage dive. We had one large female shark who did a slow pass right next to the cage. You could see her blue eye moving and focusing as she had a good look at what was going on inside our cage. Tips? I would recommend adding a few extra days on either side of the project so that you can explore Cape Town and do any additional activities that you haven't yet had the chance to fit in. The longer you are there, the longer your "to do" list will get. Local... (more)Annabel Marriott

Memorable parts? Working with people who are dedicated, informed and enthusiastic about conservation in a practical and realistic way. And of course, seeing the wildlife as they are meant to be. Tips? Be prepared for it to change your views on life. Local benefits? Many local people were employed in the reserve and the studies that were being carried out influenced how the reserve was managed and that benefited the locals. As the research carried out was the same as the normal... (more)Louise Sexton

Memorable parts? It is too early to say whether this holiday was life changing but for me, it was a homecoming as I used to live in Kenya and felt a mixture of feelings - sad at the corruption that exists in daily life at police checks, etc. but most of all humbled at the generosity, dignity and hospitality that I found in and from the locals around the project where I worked. These are people who have very little materially and work very hard to make ends meet and yet there is a joy and... (more)Jane Edington

Memorable parts? On my last day in the village where I had been with children developing a bike track and teaching them to cycle, we had a special Olympics race day! About 100 of the locals turned up to compete! It was a load of fun and very special (and my 30th birthday). Tips? Be prepared for the impact of coming back! You'll have an amazing time, really connect with the community and things in your head will shift, just a little ... but when you get home, nothing will have changed... (more)Emma Finlay

This was a wonderful vacation for my granddaughter and myself. My time at there was fantastic - I would recommend the Center in a heartbeat to anyone wishing to have a conservation-oriented holiday. Work is not too difficult on the whole, and you will have enough spare time to develop solid relationships with other volunteers and otherwise enjoy your time. (more)Ben van Haeringen

Memorable parts? Wow, where do you start? That first lemur you spot after trekking for miles through a remote forest. The warm welcome from the local people and all the kids waving to you every day. Having so many laughs each day. Meeting so many different and interesting people and feeling like you have a second family by the end of it. The sense of achievement as you see the school you're building start to take shape. The food is so good, the scenery is breathtaking, the sun rises stunning,... (more)Travis Armstrong

5 I couldn't of had a better time. I truly had the time of my life, I felt at home, happy and really didn't want to go home. It seems crazy now to think its all over but this whole experience couldn't have been much better. Best decision of my life. (more)Kirstin Runcie
A fabulous experience and I would be keen to return. (more)Mark Milligan

Memorable parts? I can't name that one and only moment I have to say. The whole experience was memorable. Not only the work but also the people I had the pleasure to meet. Tips? I was camping the first time in my life and did some research beforehand. However I did of course made a few mistakes. The next time I would definitely bring a bigger tent and 2 very strong head torches. My tent was ok for 2 weeks but for a longer period it would be to small. A very strong head torch is a... Transformative, eye-opening and deeply satisfying...Going to a country that was almost the furthest from my mind, staying in a village that you can't find on Google Maps, being immersed in spectacular countryside and doing one of the most personally satisfying projects day in and day out with open, friendly and uncomplicated people. (more)Peter Thoem
The most memorable part of the holiday was being in a community without feeling like an outsider. Everyone was willing to help and also be open about their lives. I loved everything about the experience. (more)Christina Hanazawa
The most memorable parts were the women I met and worked with as a volunteer in Uganda. The women were strong, resilient, courageous, determined and inspirational. They were also welcoming of a white woman from Australia - making me feel one of them as we walked or sat in a circle to meet and explore opportunities. (more)Cheryl Phillips

Great from start to finish - the staff, the country, the project, the work - I was sad to leave and hope to go back. Memorable parts? So many amazing things happened during my stay. My top 3 were: 1) Seeing the cheetahs being fed 2) Helping to rear a meercat baby and Clarke a serval 3) All the jokes and banter between the volunteers Tips? Memorable parts? The entire trip was memorable: sleeping in a tent and cooking over open fire, seeing the diversity of life on a daily basis, being immersed in the bush, hearing the roaring thunder bounce off the mountain walls, and doing my part for the conservation of the Thabo Thalo nature reserve. However, I think the most impactful part of the trip for me was when Tara and I went to see a local farmer whose goat herd had been attacked. The fact that we were called at all shows... Memorable parts? Daily close interaction with lions and wild dogs. Close contact with knowledgable and passionate conservationists. Tips? The company I booked with (The Great Projects) were very helpful when spoken to directly. However, they did not give the name of the project (Modisa in Botswana). As such, much of the information they gave to me was inaccurate and caused problems at the start of the trip. Had there been an emergency or had I had a strong view on what I wanted from... Memorable parts? The very first morning at Saint Luce, we were up pre-dawn and walked down to the estuary. There several pirogues took us across the lagoon to the mangrove waterways and then back again. The round trip was about 3 hours, initially mainly silent except for bird identification, the sunrise added to the atmosphere. Part of the mystery and beauty of Madagascar was revealed on that memorable morning. Tips? Read every bit of information sent out by the agent about ten times... (more)Alison Anderson

Memorable parts? Seeing the elephants up close and personal nearly every day. Tips? Be prepared to work hard. Local benefits? Memorable parts? The opportunity to see and feel a different culture. Launching the boat into and out of the water Tips? Memorable parts? Tips? Local benefits? Overall rating? Poor. Not much meaningful work. It was not well organized in keeping volunteers busy. There were lots of occasions when we ran out of jobs and were told to wander around and look for things to do. Myself and my grandchildren were extremely disappointed. We had a family meeting and left early. Still a bad taste in our mouth. After staying there I felt that the fee charged was excessive. John Brown. (more)John Brown
