Amalfi to Sorrento walking holiday in Italy
From

Memorable parts? The views and location by far - and with only a few exceptions the friendliness of the people and their willingness to speak English without any hint of frustration by your lack of Italian. The Hotel Capodimonte in Sorrento deserves a special mention for its first class service across the board but particularly for its restaurant. Tips? Do not hesitate if you have the footwear for demanding terrain. The walking guide is detailed and comprehensive - it is wise to... (more)Christine Higgins

We couldn't fault it. As an introduction to a new area, it was faultless. It felt as if we were in a very remote corner of the world! Our most interesting night was in a rural farm which has been in the same family for 400 years. (more)Mike Muir

Memorable parts? Taking boat trips on the side tributaries of the Amazon! We loved seeing all the animals. Tips? Allow more time at the Ankatera Maccu Picchu Hotel. There is a lot to do there and we didn't allow any time there (except for seeing the ruins). Local benefits? The Amazon portion of our trip benefited local villages and supported conservation of primates. The time in the Sacred Valley definitely benefited local cooperatives and individuals. Overall rating? 9/10 (more)Nadia Al-Alawi

Memorable parts? The joy and relief of reaching the top of kili, timed to perfection as the sun broke through the horizon. Tips? If you want a challenge this is the trip for you and do the 7 day your body will thank you for it. Local benefits? Yes, we brought money and employment to the area, the mountain set up was great, the only visible sign is where people had left rubbish on route. (more)Daniel Waller

Memorable parts? Hiking the Iceline trail in Yoho National Park. Seeing grizzly and black bears by the roadside. Tips? The pace of this holiday is a bit frenetic and there was very little 'down time'. Days started early and every minute was taken up with hiking, cooking for the group (of 16 in our case) and washing up, putting up or taking down tents and travelling between destinations, but, despite the hard work, it was one of the best holidays I've ever had. Truly fabulous group... (more)Christabel Owens

Memorable parts? Trekking with the most amazing mountain backdrop for several days, in Torres del Paine, culminating in the climb up to Las Torres themselves; there just aren't the words to do this place justice. Tips? Do some walking beforehand, if you want to get the most from it. Also, don't forget a camera, or you will be truly sorry! Local benefits? Since we stayed, ate and drank locally, this should be a positive thing. Minimized environmental impacts is a bit tricky,... (more)Chris Senior

Memorable parts? Walking in the unspoilt countryside of Borromdeo and birdwatching at Satpura lake. Also visit to Sanchi Buddhist site. The elephant ride and seeing wild dogs from the howdah! Tips? For Borromdeo, perhaps visit one month earlier, ie in early Feb or before it gets hot in the middle of the day in late Feb/early March, so you have to get up very early in the morning! Memorable parts? Havana - most exciting. Trekking through brown/red mud - most memorable. Walking was generally in woods without much in the way of views and always on narrow slipperey paths - no "dirt vehicle width roads" as the first item listed in the trip notes. Unfortunate that the "Two nights guaranteed in a hotel in Old Havana..." didn't materialise. Tips? Read the trip notes carefully and research the country with material outside tour operator's description. Take extra stuff... (more)Sean Kavanagh

Memorable parts? Having lunch under a tree in a flower-filled meadow at about 1500m, gazing at the sheer face of the Monch with its ribbon waterfalls cascading down. We'd met no one on the walk, the little chalet in the field was empty; all we could hear was birdsong and rippling water. Magical. Tips? 1 Buy a Swiss Card (before you book the train from Zurich to Interlaken!) and get reduced travel costs. We hadn't known about it and also didn't realise beforehand how much we would... Memorable parts? Trekking up to the high passes and looking out over the valley with a refreshing mint tea. Tips? Take clothes for all occasions! A sun hat is essential but also warmer clothes and a good raincoat, as once out of the city and at altitude, the weather was more varied. Local benefits? Yes, we spent a day cleaning up a small town in the High Altas. There was no rubbish collection here and litter was dropped in the street. With the advent of plastics, this means... (more)Rosie Welch

Memorable parts? Hard to pick one specific out of the week. The cliff top walks with the magnificent panoramic views across and beyond the island, surrounded by the vibrant colours and scents of the wild flowers is the stand out memory. Tips? Our top advice would be to go in April the spring flowers are fabulous and the weather was perfect for walking. The walks very accurate and well described by Headwater and I would recommend following them. We only had one issue with the walk... (more)Philip Briggs

Memorable parts? Swimming in the sea below the ancient monastery at San Fruttuoso after a hot walk was just magical! Tips? It appeared there was a big effort to preserve the natural areas that were part of the walk. Overall rating? It was wonderful (more)Lynn Bowie
