Nature & wildlife in Western Australia

Western Australia is a nature lovers’ paradise where you can dive with the world's largest fish – the whale shark – or snorkel with manta rays at Ningaloo Reef, swim with wild dolphins and discover Australia’s only biodiversity hotspot in the southwest. Historic Fremantle is good for whale-watching, and is just a short boat ride from car-free Rottnest Island. Margaret River has become a centre for gourmet food and wine.

Western Australia might be Australia’s largest state, taking up almost a third of the country, but in many ways it is also the most undiscovered. Geographers are still mapping islands off the northwest coast; scientists are still discovering new species of flora and fauna and traditionally tourists headed east. This means its 12,500km of pearly-white coastline, rugged outback and lush forests teaming with rare wildlife are unspoilt and travellers can often experience the extraordinary scenery all to themselves.

Diving and snorkelling in Western Australia

Western Australia’s coral coast is a veritable underwater paradise. Its abundant and varied marine life and mix of tropical and temperate climates provide unbeatable diving and snorkeling.

Ningaloo Reef - The Ningaloo Marine Park encompasses more than 500 sq km of ocean. It is home to 500 fish species and 200 species of soft and hard coral which form mesmerising underwater gardens in the shallow lagoons. The coral reef fish of Ningaloo are among the most beautiful and intricately patterned tropical fish in the world and, because Ningaloo reef lies only a few hundred metres off the shore, it can be enjoyed even by novice snorkellers, without the need for oxygen tanks or a diving qualification. Ningaloo Reef is one of the few places in the world where you can swim with whale sharks – the world’s largest fish, which can grow up to 18 metre long.
