"To me, this is the perfect beach resort; if I write anymore I run the risk of not doing justice to this unique and elegant boutique! One can only drift into a idyllic dream upon beholding the beauty of this setting. And one can only marvel in admiration at the success of Sir Royston Hopkin and his family for turning this dream into reality. In addition to this, they also run a scholarship which each year funds the education of five children from underprivileged backgrounds. ‘What excites me about me about this holiday?’ - It is the perfect beach resort."

Environment
Perfection is hard to maintain. However, we are doing our part. True, we have strived to blend into our surroundings from the very start. Only now, we are that much more conscious of the impact we have on the paradise that surrounds us. In fact, everywhere you look, the resort is a proud testament to the co-existence of man and nature. The resort is home to a multitude of environmental practices – from non-chlorine swimming pools, home grown herb gardens, to natural composting, and energy conservation is a preoccupation. We use solar heating, desalination plants and consumption reducing devices such as energy saving bulbs and a close monitoring system on air conditioning usage. We have taken many specific measures to ensure that our environmental impact minimized the resort is managed run sustainable manner. To become more efficient we make energy-efficient light bulbs in rooms public areas, manual energy monitoring guest AC units by trained staff, timers photo-cell systems on all outdoor lights, line-dry clothes, with less electric dryers. We have a strict policy turning off of vacant room lights, and use solar roof top heaters for hot water. Our recycling policy includes the re-use of office paper for internal printing, and use of a paper shredding machine. Shredded paper donated to local florists and funeral homes. We have composting program in place, and a linen change every other day offered to guests unless requested otherwise by guest. We have initiated the grinding of used bath soaps to make laundry detergent for uniform washes, and have switched to environmentally friendly cleaning products and chemicals. All resort herbs and seasonings are grown on property. To aid the preservation of our immediate beach and ocean environment, we have been replanting beach front trees and have placed garbage containers along the beach. We use non-chlorinated guest swimming pools, and have an ongoing community cleanup, participatign in reef cleaning schemes. We also educate and train our staff in responsible environmental practices, and have a Staff training program to educate employees about conservation efforts and have a Resort Green Team, made up of line staff and managers to manage environmental program. We have an appointment Environmental Officer. We undertake Screening of the resort's suppliers for proper environmental practices and products, and have posted literature to promote guest involvement. Community As a native Grenadian, the owner, Mr Royston Hopkin, is a leading member of the local community in both Grenada and the wider Caribbean. He has held the position of chairman of the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (CAST) for several years and as such, has taken a leading role in promoting the adoption of sustainable practices in hotel management throughout the Caribbean. We support our local community in Grenada through the Royston Hopkin Scholarship fund, which provides money each year for five needy students attending schools in the local community to receive all textbooks for their secondary and tertiary education. This fund has enabled children from underprivileged homes, who might not otherwise have been able to afford to attend school to achieve an education. The owner is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Queen Elizabeth Home for Children and the hotel makes regular contributions to this charitable cause. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
