description
Pirate's Point is an excellent choice for those who want a "get away from the crowd" type vacation. We offer relaxation for divers and non-divers alike. Our resort has a very cosy, family-like atmosphere and many guests have made life-long friendships and networking contacts. You can be as private or social as you like.

Little Cayman. Little Cayman, the smallest and most primitive of the three Cayman Islands, is a place where you can truly relax and renew your spirit. Only ten miles long and one mile wide, Little Cayman is an intimate and peaceful paradise. Bask in the sun on the white sand beaches, read a novel while lounging in a hammock beneath a palm tree (our rooms and clubhouse have many selections for your reading pleasure), or simply take a deep breath and view the peace and beauty all around you. The small number of residents treat you like long lost family, waving to you every time you pass by. Although Little Cayman has adapted electricity and modern conveniences, the solitude remains intact. There's no crowds and no traffic jams - just the sounds of birds chirping and the waves breaking over the coral reefs. Visitors can ride bicycles (provided free by the resort) around the island, rarely passing a car. For a unique picnic experience, visitors can take a boat to Owen's Island, a small remote island right off the coast.

Gladys Howard. Gladys Howard is the owner/manager of the resort. She is an award-winning cookbook author who has studied with Julia Child, James Beard, Jacques Pepin, Lucy Lo, and at Cordon Bleu in Paris. She has operated an international cooking school and gourmet catering service for more than twenty years before coming to Little Cayman. In 2003, Gladys was awarded the Queen's "Badge of Honor" by Prince Edward during the Cayman Islands Quincentennial for her volunteer work in environmental conservation with the National Trust in Little Cayman.
special things to see and do here
Diving. In Little Cayman, scuba divers enjoy some of the best diving in the Caribbean. Bloody Bay Wall, voted one of the best dive sites by leading dive magazines, starts at only 18 feet and goes down for 6000 feet. Enjoy colourful coral gardens, black coral trees, and exotic tropical marine life. There are over 50 incredible and unique dive sites waiting to be explored. If diving is not your fancy, there are ample opportunities to swim or snorkel. There is also great fishing in Little Cayman including bonefish and tarpon.

Nature. A nature lover's delight, Little Cayman is known for a huge population of the Red Footed Booby and the Magnificent Frigate birds. The Booby Pond Nature Reserve, over 200 acres, has an observation deck where visitors can use telescopes to bird watch. In addition to birds, Over 2,000 Rock Iguanas inhabit the island. The iguanas are greatly protected and you will see road signs that say "Iguanas Have the Right Away" or "Iguana Crossing. Don't worry, the iguanas are quite shy and do not bother visitors.

how this holiday makes a difference
    Environment:
Pirates Point Resort has been the leader in environment concerns for Little Cayman for the past 20 years. As the organizer of the National Trust on Little Cayman (and owner of Pirates Point) the majority of the clean-up projects that have been organized and carried out on the whole island were by our resort.

We have pushed the Dept of Environment Health into doing recycling of all items and have succeeded in getting only aluminium cans to be part of the program here in Little Cayman (so far, still working on more recycling!)

When constructing the National Trust Building, that has observation decks to observe the largest Red-footed Booby Bird sanctuary in the Western Hemisphere, that is a RAMSAR site, I selected recycled materials such as TreX for the decking and recycled concrete board for the facing on the building. I have worked on promoting native plants for landscape for water conservation, and have urged new construction projects to only clear only the parcel and not bulldoze the entire lot.

At my resort, we have installed shade shutters on all of our window openings to cut down on our electrical consumption, we also issue drink bottles with the guests' names on them for the guests to use during their stay with us and to take home. This eliminates disposal plastic glasses for use in rooms, around the pool and on the dive boat. We have installed limiting shower heads in all rooms for water conservation, and urge guests to reuse their towels for less laundry, as well as not changing sheets but once a week unless necessary. We also urge our guests not to flush every time, with signage that says "If it's yellow, let it mellow, if brown, flush it down". Our guests agree with this program and act accordingly!! We do not offer single use bottles of amenities in our rooms.

We recycle left over food into soups for the following day with great success!! We try to conserve fuel by combining runs with several stops. We are presently "Go Green" and are working on Green Globe. Over the years I have organized activities on this island to promote environmental awareness and to try to keep our small island as pristine as possible.

    Community:
The Trust building also has the island's only library and is used by the entire island as a community centre. It has a Tea room where homemade ice cream and coffee, teas, and home made pastries are served.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
