description
Luxury hotel, breadImagine being on an island where the sounds of nature are prevalent, where fruit, fish, flowers, wildlife and trees abound. Our resort is located on such an island. A resort where showers are open air, dining is close to the water and sumptuous meals are prepared from fresh fruits and vegetables and served in an atmosphere of relaxation.

A Carib Chief once resided on our island and now you can now reside here for a week or two and be treated royally. Once you step onto our island you can take your shoes off and leave your cares behind. Take a nap or read a book in a hammock under a thatched hut, listen to the water lapping the shore as you dine under our thatched huts. Sample one or all of our six breads – all baked at the resort. Swim a few strokes off shore to our Coconut Bar. Take a leisurely stroll with a cocktail in hand down to Sunset Point.

Do nothing but enjoy nature and relaxation with the comforts and food expected at a high end resort. The experience is one you will remember forever and it is one which will keep you returning and returning.

how this holiday makes a difference
Community:
Our two owners are Vincentian and as part of their commitment to the staff and community, we participate in several initiatives. Firstly, all of our staff are Vincentian and every year we provide a total of five secondary school scholarships to the children of four staff members and one deceased staff member. We also have a staff medical insurance plan (life, medical, dental and vision) and the company pays 50% of the premium. In addition, we make a contribution every year to the St. Vincent Coastguard’s annual Christmas party for the children and elderly in Calliaqua (the closest community to us). We also make food donations for fundraising activities to the St. Paul’s Anglican Church in our community.

Luxury hotel, bandWe employ two musical bands (a steelband and an authentic Vincentian stringband) every week throughout the year to provide musical entertainment for our guests. We offer concessionary hotel rates to the Mobile Medical Mission (Group of opthalmologists and optometrists from the U.S) in order to help facilitate their annual trip to St. Vincent & the Grenadines to provide voluntary eye examinations and eye surgery to Vincentians.

We offer concessionary hotel rates to the International Hospital for Children (IHC) for the various medical teams who come at different times of the year to St. Vincent to perform examinations and surgery on children. We have also donated several hotel stays to the I.H.C. for their annual auction in the U.S. Funds are raised at this auction to help facilitate medical visits (for major surgery which cannot be performed in St. Vincent) to the U.S. by Vincentian children.

We provide cultural information for our guests such as 'The Ins & Outs of St. Vincent & the Grenadines' magazine, 'Life in St. Vincent & the Grenadines' magazines. St. Vincent & the Grenadines maps are placed in the locally woven folders in all of our guest cottages. Our staff are trained on the job. We also pay for them to attend training put on by the St. Vincent & the Grenadines Hotel & Tourism Association, The Employers Federation and the Chamber of Industry & Commerce. They also attend free training sessions at our country’s Department of Tourism. All staff work by departmental schedules and they work 8 hours per day. They are given the day off on their birthday and a birthday cake. They are also have the option of dining at the hotel on their birthday. We provide staff uniforms and we launder them. We provide staff transport early in the morning and at nights.

All fruits, vegetables and herbs used by the hotel are locally grown on St. Vincent. They are delivered to us by farmers and suppliers. Pork and goat are raised on local farms and purchased from local butchers. All fish is purchased from local fishermen who bring this fish ashore at the island. Some of our spa products are made in Barbados from guava leaves and seeds.

Environment:
Fruit and vegetable peelings are given to a pig farmer. Old oil (used) is given away. Old roof grass thatch is used as fertilizer. Cuttings from the garden are used to make mulch. Our in room laundry bags are made of cloth and are therefore reusable. Our bags used in the garden (for garden waste) are old rice and flour bags which we purchase from bakeries and the local rice mill and they are reusable.

Luxury hotel, beachSome rain water is used at our laundry. Some laundry waste water is used to water plants. Water meters are checked daily to ensure that there are no leaks. Staff are encouraged to report leaks promptly and to turn off dripping pipes. We have signs in cottages encouraging guests to participate in a towel and sheet reuse programme. We also use energy saving bulbs and solar water heaters on some buildings and use environmental cleaning products.

Our building materials are local stone, bamboo and grass thatch. The company has an environmental policy which is placed in folders in all guest cottages. This policy is also posted at our Front Office and in our staff canteen. As part of all staff job descriptions, they are required to support our environmental policy. In our office we re-use all office paper for inhouse use and inhouse correspondence in printers and photo copy machine. Sending of e-mails in house where possible instead of printing messages.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
