description
This resort is situated within the regency of Karangasem, close to the village of Candi Dasa, and provides the perfect base from which to explore unspoiled east Bali. This area of the island is renowned for its spectacular beauty, where the steep rise from coast to mountain creates magical scenery. Here the local people follow a traditional lifestyle, whether it is cultivating rice, farming, fishing, weaving baskets and the famous double ikat textiles or salt making.

Various walking tours are available, taking in sights like Mount Agung, home to Bali’s mother temple at Besakih, and the spectacular terraced hillsides. Other tours can be arranged to see the traditional Bali Aga village of Tenganan, the water palaces of Tirtagangga and Ujung, the weaving village of Sidemen, the Kerta Gosa Palace of Justice at Klungkung and various Balinese temples.

The waters east of the resort teem with richness and diversity and are home to seven wondrous dive sites. All rooms and suites face the ocean with clear views across the straits to Nusa Penida. A contemporary interpretation of traditional Balinese architecture is artfully combined with modern amenities to create a relaxed environment in harmony with its natural surroundings.
rooms, food and facilities
Swimming pool: The swimming pool is a central feature of the resort and is designed as an unusual inverted pyramid. This creates shallow waters around the edges and deep water in the middle. Set in landscaped gardens under swaying coconut palms, it provides the perfect place to lay back and enjoy the resort's peaceful, sunny environment.

Leisure concierge: The hotel has its own leisure concierge where guests can book trips to local attractions and excursions from whitewater rafting to deep-sea fishing.

Cooking school: Alila Manggis opened the first hands on cooking school in Bali and has the only East Balinese specialty programme on the island. The Alila Manggis Cooking School is where the team of chefs celebrate and share with you the true essence of the Balinese lifestyle through fascinating culinary adventures.

Spa: The Spa offers a uniquely relaxing experience featuring traditional Indonesian and Balinese treatments from facials to aromatherapy massage. New at the resort are outdoor spa bales located right on the grounds of the Pandan Forest. Our 2 new outdoor spa bales face the sea and offer a haven to rebalance your mind and body.

Mountain biking: Mountain bikes are available for hire at the hotel along with maps of suggested routes through the spectacular scenery and villages, for beginners to the true adventure cyclists.

Water sports: Bodyboards and snorkel masks and fins are available for hire. The resort also has its own Balinese outrigger that can take guests from the beach in front of the hotel to the Blue Lagoon, a beautiful and colourful reef teeming with marine life. East Bali has the most spectacular dive sites on the island, and all are located close to us. Diving and fishing trips can be arranged through the hotel.

Remote beach excursions: Enjoy getting lost in some of the more remote and secret hideaway spots in East Bali. Your own driver will take you to a remote beach to enjoy lunch by the sea, with the afternoon free for snorkeling and sunbathing in your own piece of hidden paradise. Please enquire about pricing.

Trekking: Two to six-hour treks are available in the company of knowledgeable local hotel guides. Trips include a trek to Gumang Hill for stunning views of verdant rice terraces and Mount Agung; Kastala to Tenganan, a trek off the beaten track through rice terraces and small farms to the Bali Aga village of Tenganan, famous for its double ikat weaving and unique basket-making; and the Mount Agung trek for the truly adventurous, a four-hour climb reaching the top in time for sunrise.

Wedding experience: Ceremonies can be organized on the grounds or on the beach (tides permitting). With advance preparation, we can prepare a traditional wedding ceremony, the Balinese nuptial blessing, bridal procession, cocktail reception and royal dinner.

how this holiday makes a difference
In order to provide our guests with a Balinese experience in terms of culture, environment and ambience management recognises the need to work in harmony with the local community. It is our commitment to measure our greenhouse gas emissions, energy and fresh water usage, waste water discharges, minimize our solid waste and set targets etc., in all areas to improve our environmental performance through benchmarking with Green Globe 21 every year.

As per Green Globe 21 requirements we have a 100% recycled water treatment system in the form of a waste water garden so no effluent is sent into polluting local river and nearby ocean.

We use energy saving light bulbs. We encourage recycling and reduced usage of packaging and frequency of transport with suppliers. We encourage our guests to reuse linen and offer bicycles for tours around the area instead of cars for transport.

We offer our guests walking tours through local rice paddies, villages and visits to our organic farm/garden to appreciate local flora and fauna. We usage of organic soaps and spa products made from base materials originating from profit-sharing community projects.

We minimize the use of plastic in the hotel mini bars, wrapping of laundry, gift packaging in boutique etc. All natural or local alternatives are being used. We separate waste separation and offer a training program to local garbage collector on reducing the amount of bottles, plastics, cans etc. to end up in incinerators. All organic waste is used for composting in our organic garden.

We run a ‘clean up the world weekend’ every September combining hotel staff, local community, local schools, restaurants, other hotels, environment organisations in local tourism area. We co-ordinate presentations of “Is it really rubbish” play to all the school children in schools in to teach about recycling. We also present Green Globe 21 aims from our Green Team to local schools including information about waste separation training, impact of behaviour to nature.

We pay for a local dance class from the village to have their performances at the hotel for guests to enjoy local culture, while ensuring payments are distributed among the different local communicates. We cooperate with local farmers, East Bali Poverty Project and our organic garden to teach about perma-culture, organic farming and negative impact on herbicides & pesticides.

Over 85% of our staff are from local villages within a radius of 10 km of the hotel. We give financial payments to villages every month to support their lifestyle and culture. We use local product suppliers as priority over others in supply contracts to hotel. We use locally sourced materials instead of imported materials or supplies.

We offer experiences and excursions that make use of local points of interest, supporting local tourist objects and pay local trekkers, guides and people-of-interest to share their knowledge and experience with our guests (e.g. local healers, Balinese astrologers, painters, dance teachers etc.). We offer complimentary experiences (yoga, thai chi) to our guests, employing local teachers and guru’s. Performances on special events are sourced from local dance schools, local communities and kept as per local traditions thus ensuring local employment.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
