How the minimum criteria of the responsible travel standard was met...

Economic responsibility

Orange Tree Yoga Retreats are based at two local retreat centres in the Algarve. Both are ethically run using local staff, therapists and caterers. Orange Tree Yoga Retreats also donate to local charities each year through the promotion of needy causes and by co-organising an annual “Salute to the Sun” which involves almost 200 local yoga students and teachers and raises money for many local and international charities.

Environmental responsibility

Orange Tree Yoga Retreats encourage all their clients to recycle their refuse and both retreat centres actively promote this also. Rachel uses minimal paper, all brochures are produced for online use only and guests are encouraged to submit their paperwork online also, rather than sending printed bookings forms through the post.

Social responsibility

Rachel encourages guests to see the “real” Algarve, to visit the nature reserves of the Ria Formosa, to visit local restaurants and tavernas rather than commercial beach bars, to experience local fairs and festivals including the famous, Festival Med – an amazing world music festival just on the doorstep of Quinta Mimosa which happens for 5 days every June.

After studying in India and the UK and teaching yoga since 1998, Rachel was able to combine her joint passions for Iyengar yoga and southern Europe by setting up her retreats in 2003. Nature walks, gourmet veggie meals and cultural excursions complete the scene.
