How the minimum criteria of the responsible travel standard was met...

Economic responsibility

  • We employ experienced guides from the local communities. Our guides encourage travellers to purchase locally-sourced memorabilia, gifts and crafts to ensure that our host communities benefit economically from our visit.
  • We also have developed programs to help children in distress. Each day, thousands of children roam the streets of Vietnam. They are hungry and have no home to return to at night. Lacking familial support and social protection, these children constitute one of the most vulnerable demographics in Vietnam, often falling prey to trafficking, abuse and labour exploitation. Orphanages play an important role as a refuge for these children. We provide financial contributions to local organizations such as Thi Nghe Orphanage School in Ho Chi Minh City, SOS Orphanage Village in Dalat, and Vinh Son Orphanage in KonTum (Central Highland of Vietnam).
  • In Laos, Vista Asia Travel is also known for our efforts to help children and families living in remote areas. Some of our signature activities include:
    - Helping to reduce the education gap between urban and rural areas by collaborating with nongovernmental organisations to publish text books for school children living in remote areas and encouraging clients to purchase books and make charitable donations that will go toward school building repairs, tables, chairs, and toilet facilities.
    - We also urge our customers to donate stationary supplies, second-hand clothing, and any other item that may benefit school children who live disconnected villages.
  •  One of our most ambitious projects is building schools in remote areas. Every tour we run through Responsible Tourism Projects, and we reserve at least US$3.00 per customer to keep in a central fund to be used for school construction materials. We work with village leaders and local residents to work cooperatively in this important project.
  •  In a similar way, we work collaboratively with villagers to build sanitary toilet facilities to improve the overall health of remote villages.

Environmental responsibility

  • Throughout the Asia-Pacific region, rapid economic and population growth has contributed to environmental threats – from urban excess, deforestation, overfishing, global warming, air pollution, and limited safe water supplies. The situation is particularly acute for Southeast Asian nations because their economies — especially the tourism sector — depend so fundamentally on pristine natural resources. We are sensitive to these environmental challenges, and because of this, we adhere to strict environmentally-responsible practices at all times. In addition, we model these behaviours for our clients and encourage them to be environmentally respectful as well.
  • All of our offices are committed to using recycled and recyclable materials and energy-saving devices to minimize the impact we have on precious resources.
  • Whenever possible, we select local suppliers and hotels that have environmentally friendly policies in place.
  • We use electronic tools (Internet and email) to communicate with suppliers and clients to minimize waste.
  • We offer information sheets relevant to the environment to visitors before beginning each tour and provide advice on how they can minimize environmental their impact during their travels.

Social responsibility

  • There are many ethnic groups throughout Asia. Over time, these groups have adapted to mountains, deserts, grasslands, and forests. Some groups are completely urban, while others have been agrarian or even nomadic for thousands of years. We respect the cultural, religious and social practices in our travel destinations and prepare our clients so that they will also be sensitive to these differences.
  • Our locally-employed guides and staff members have a comprehensive understanding of their location’s cultural traditions, history and environment, and they serve as excellent liaisons. We always make sure that both the local people and the travellers have a positive experience.
  • Whether we are introducing travellers to the indigenous inhabitants of northern Laos, the Khmu, or inviting them to participate in the Ho Chi Minh City Tours or take a Thai cooking class, our ultimate goal is to create a synergy between cultures that will forge stronger understanding, acceptance and respect.
