Jane Lewis review 16 Jan 2009
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Everything! We loved being surrounded by historic French villages; staying in a beautiful rustic (but VERY comfortable) 19th century stone cottage; the warmth and approachability of our hosts Nicole and Alex Crawford; and being spoilt for choice when arranging our daily activities. We went for lovely long walks; visited outdoor markets; ate wonderful, good value food at local restaurants; explored castles, chateaus and other historic sites; people-watched from snug, friendly cafes and managed to do it all with very little ... ok, ok only about 3 words of French. Everyone we met was very helpful and completely dispelled the myth for us of 'unfriendly' French people.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Try Nicole's cooking, buy tasty produce from neighbouring farmers, hire a car and explore beautiful countryside and lovely nearby villages and visit in winter or summer or perhaps spring or autumn - I'm sure you will love it at any time of the year! You can easily fill in a week with all the wonderful places to see and although we loved snuggling up in front of the pot-belly stove with the snow falling outside, we want to return soon and see the fields of gorgeous sunflowers and go horse-riding and ...
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?
Alex and Nicole are very keen (but definitely not too pushy) about promoting local businesses. They are 'givers' and not 'takers' and provide a very personalised service. We only had to mention a desire to see or do something and they immediately supplied all the relevant details. They are into recycling and gently encourage their guests to also be supportive of their lovely, pristine environment. We enjoyed buying fresh local produce directly from nearby farms and sampling incredible cheeses, wines, pastries... from the village markets.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
We have not got a single complaint about our stay with Nicole and Alex Crawford in their gite outside the beautiful, French village of Le Grand Pressigny in the Loire Valley. Everything from the price of accommodation to the furnishings exceeded all of our expectations … and fulfilled all of our hopes for a genuine ‘European winter experience”. We felt soooo clever to have discovered such brilliant, affordable family accommodation in such an ‘authentic’ part of the Loire Valley on our first trip to Europe. Les Limornieres, Le Grand Pressigny was a wonderful holiday experience for our WHOLE family - which includes two teenagers!
