Beverley Whatford review 21 Oct 2011
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
An unexpected but totally delightful encounter with a sea cow in the shallows off the beach. He nibbled my toes and allowed me to stroke him. Magical! They are very friendly characters, vulnerable to extinction. A project near the house to support sea cow conservation is a must see.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
If you're looking for nightlife, don't visit! The only nightlife here is nature. Travel light. Swim, snorkel, relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. A decent phrase book is handy to interact with the charming locals. Maria Helena cooks some gorgeous food, try the squid rice. Also, check out the local restaurant Chez Domi. The owner is knowledgeable of the area and the food is delicious.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?
Locals, Maria Helena and Laudemir (lovely people) look after the house and grounds. Cycle to the village to buy local produce. I didn't see any environmental damage. Quite a poor area but clean and looked after.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Most enjoyable. A relaxing, restful holiday. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. Michael, the owner of the house was very helpful and seemed to have a great rapport with the community. The house is amazingly beautiful. A long trip from the U.K. but definitely worth it.
