1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We really had a great time on our trip to Kenya in July 2007. Our guide, driver and cook were excellent and really attentive to all our needs, as well as being very good company and great fun - we couldn't believe that there would be three people looking after us. One of our worries was that we would be ill with the change in diet and climate, however we had no problems on that score. The meat fruit and vegetables were all really fresh and bought from local markets. We really enjoyed the opportunity to meet and interact with local people and visit their homes and farms which was something we would never have done had we travelled with a big tour company.
All of the people we met can teach us a lot about hospitality and what really matters. This is probably one of the things that will stay in our memories even longer than the amazing scenery and wildlife. We'll always remember how amusing a Masai woman found the fact that an Irishman might peel potatoes or indeed cook at all, and the hilarity that broke out in one home at the news that we sleep upstairs! William was excellent at spotting and identifying wild animals. We got every opportunity to walk in the countryside which was a big plus as we don't like to be sitting in a vehicle all day. I'm a pretty bad passenger but despite the bad roads and the madcap driving of Matatu drivers everywhere, I was more relaxed with Kinuthia driving than I'd be on an average day driving around Dublin. The visit to the school was a big highlight as well. Back in Nairobi we enjoyed an early morning (before the crowds) visit to the Karen Blixen Museum and the Kazuri bead factory (a really worthwhile project). We found everyone very friendly.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Remember to bring loads of small things for kids like balloons, pencils, notebooks and snack packs of sweets. Head torch a must. Heavy on baby wipes.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?
Not that sure one can fly to Kenya and do a lot of driving while being kind to the environment but we certainly felt it benefited local people rather than the big tour operators.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Couldn't recommend this trip highly enough
