Holiday Reviews

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same trip can have different views!

Mongolia family holiday, independent reviews

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Just the sheer beauty of the Mongolian landscape. It surpassed expectations. The wildlife - pairs of golden eagles just sitting by the road! Staying in gers was fun, as was meeting some of the local people and sampling 101 things to do with yak's milk...

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The weather is variable so do make sure you bring wet weather gear and a jumper for the evenings, even in summer. Take matches or a lighter for the stoves in your ger. LOADS of camera memory and spare batteries as you won't be able to charge. Tea and coffee would be handy to as you usually get a thermos of boiled water in the evenings. Entertainment for the long truck journeys too - 5 hours a day. Change your money in Ulaanbaatar before you set off as you won't be able to afterwards, but you really don't need very much. Oh, and maybe some chilli sauce/ketchup - the food, whilst perfectly filling, tends to be quite bland, so can do with livening up.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Air travel aside...yes. We visited a nomadic family and gave copious presents to the kids. The money from the ger camps obviously benefits the local community.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely fantastic. The group got on really well, despite the age difference between the kids, and it helped that Catherine's own (half Mongolian) kids were there too. On a personal note, I had quite a bad horse fall while I was there, and Catherine and her husband could not have been more helpful, taking me to two hospitals, getting me treated, picking up medicine for me, translating etc. Highly recommended.
