1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There wasn't one thing... the whole package was fantastic. The accommodation and surroundings were exactly what the web site led us to expect... beautiful. The wildlife was in abundance; monkeys, lizards, huge butterflies, black tipped reef sharks and colourful fish. The food was absolutely delicious with plenty of it, we even managed to get a few recipes to take home. What we enjoyed most was the peace and quiet, it was a truly idyllic place to spend a honeymoon, made even better (if that’s possible) by the staff, who couldn't do enough for us and became friends. Many an evening was spent watching the sunset from the bar, drinking cocktails and enjoying the company of the staff and other holidaymakers. The excursions; to the waterfall, snorkelling, round the island and fishing with the locals all added to our enjoyment and gave us a chance to see more of Tioman Island.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take a few good books and enjoy the peace and quiet... all too quickly its back to traffic, TV and work. Oh and if you take snacks with you put them away or the monkeys will nick them!!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The resort blended well into the rain forest and was constructed from reclaimed wood. We were taken to local villages where we ate lunch and the staff had good relationships with the local people. Any waste was managed with minimal impact to the environment and there was no rubbish left around the resort, which was not true of other resorts on the island.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

WOW!! It was a once in a lifetime holiday that could be repeated over and over.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The whole experience! The natural beauty of the place, the freedom to have "your own" holiday. Snorkelling, diving, swimming with turtles or doing absolutely nothing I can't think of a better place to do it. Very friendly, helpful people excellent food and comfortable accommodation. Watching the monkeys from my room and the kingfishers from the restaurant not to mention the monitor lizard passing through from time to time. Half of me wants to tell the world about this place and the other half wants to keep it a secret so that it doesn't get spoilt!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared to be totally blown away by this place. This holiday is what you make it, there are trips available but mostly you are left to do your own thing. Take plenty of sun cream and something for coral cuts then relax, relax relax...

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I understand that the whole resort is made from local material. It is a very simple resort with limited impact on the environment and I understand that the plan is to keep it small and as ecologically sound as possible. One thing we did notice was that there was very little warning to visitors about the danger of standing on the coral. We were warned what it may do to us but not the damage it would do the coral. Maybe this should be more heavily stressed.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Without a doubt one of the best holidays I have had.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Our entire stay was memorable in so many ways... arrival in, essentially, paradise; wonderful food; perfect accommodation with the sea lapping right outside; the best verandah view you could imagine; friendly but efficient organisation; perfect climate and complete serenity...

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be a good snorkeller to enjoy what’s on offer under the surface; stay in Singapore for at least three or four days before or after; be in mind to wind down and enjoy a place for what and where it is; visit the local villages for a taste of island life eg Mukut; if you have time and energy do the mountain trek; get an underwater housing for your camera; check out the different houses to see which will suit you best; ideal for inquisitive children who love the outdoors or to get to know it and real wildlife unlike any package experience.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes very much... local people were employed, and the design and construction of the accommodation and other buildings is in local style and materials mostly… also power consumption is kept to a minimum, with no air conditioning, which you don't need, and low level lighting which adds to the ambience of a tropical island. All development on the island should follow this kind of policy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Exceptional, right up there with the best holidays.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I would say the best part of the honeymoon for me was the amount of wildlife you get to see, you don’t even have to try too hard either. If it's not monkeys or monitor lizards a few feet away it's sting rays and small Sharks just of the jetty. On any of the trips as well you are guaranteed to see something new.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Definitely be aware of the coral, you can either take some suitable footwear with you or use the ones supplied. Do not expect to loose any weight, the food is gorgeous and there's plenty of it! Be prepared for the holiday blues when you get home!!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I would definitely say the holiday benefited the local people, many are employed by the resort and all of the food and supplies or bought locally. The facilities although minimal are perfect and I would say have very little impact on the environment, you really feel you are on a deserted Island but with that comes some nice creature comforts that do not encroach into the local habitat and environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Our honeymoon was perfect, we couldn't have asked for a better place to spend two weeks, the place is beautiful, food is great and the hosts were superb. I miss everything about it especially having my food brought to me and introduced so well, I have tried to convince my wife to do this at home but it just isn’t the same.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We stayed in Rock House in August 2008 for 10 nights but wish we had spent at least 2 weeks here at this wonderful resort. We were late arriving as the flight had been cancelled so we had to make alterative arrangements and arrived about 3 hours later than expected. A quick call to Britain to explain we had arrived and within half hour we were picked up. This is not just a resort but a rare experience of nature at its best and likeminded people to share it with that you will cherish for many years to come.

If you are interested in nature, a diver/snorkeller or honeymooner with a laid back attitude and care for the environment then this will be ideal for you. Yes; when the tide goes out it is rocky but this is part of its appeal. A review left by another holidayer complained about "dead coral" I am not a wiz on coral but I do know that this rocky formation has been there a while and Coral does need to be covered and as this is on the shore line it is at the mercy of the tides.

Accommodation: Very carefully thought out, rustic, very spacious and clean. Comfy bed, surprising amount of power from the shower, large balcony. Sea view whilst lay in bed! Nice lighting in the separate living area. Towels and linen changed every other day and the room tidied and cleaned daily.

Trips: A trek to the waterfall is a must, Snorkelling at Rengis is also a must, I was lucky enough to see a 3 metre reef shark which was amazing. The team are happy to accommodate suggestions for trips too which is great. Whilst we were there we walked part of the twin peaks; not for the faint hearted I might add but once up there the view was great and you really felt like you had earnt a beer once back at the resort.

Food: Traditional Malaysian food was delicious with fish meat and vegetables every night. Highlights: BBQ Dinner on the beach with bonfire and singsongs by the fire with Yono on the guitar, a beautiful evening, enjoyed by all.

Staff: The staff were great, it was like staying at a friends house who were so enthusiastic and keen to keep you happy and make the experience a special one. We couldn't of asked for more.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take insect repellent for trips into the jungle, we did not see any sand flies here though. Make alternative arrangements for getting to Pulau Tioman just in case there is a problem with the flight from Singapore. On our way out to the island we had to get the ferry from Mersing in Malaysia as our flight from Seletar Airport (Singapore) had been cancelled, we got a taxi from Seletar to Mersing which took 2.5hours then the ferry which just took an hour and only cost £5 each!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Being met with such a warm & friendly greeting by Lucy and Yono at the airport at Tekek and walking the 50 yards to the boat in a picturesque little harbour. Then our first sight of the resort from the sea, mesmerising & beautiful, it takes your breath away - we all started relaxing straight away. The BBQ evening was outstanding - the food was amazing and the staff had gone to so much trouble to make the evening special. The bonfire on the beach, the limbo competition and the singing around the fire all added to the experience. All the staff are outstanding, & soon become friends. The food especially in the evening is fantastic. We were really lucky to make friends with two other couples which made our stay even more enjoyable. The snorkelling is simply amazing - tropical fish, black tip reef sharks, the resident Angel fish, rays & the elusive turtles all make up lifetime memories. Snorkelling on Regnis Island is unforgettable as is the jungle trip to the waterfall.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared to look after yourself during the day - the staff make a special effort to leave guests to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the resort without constant interruptions. Expect a few bumps and grazes - the beach leads onto dead coral and getting in/out of the water can be a tricky business. Elsewhere, the jetty has a few rough edges and one must take care on the rocks. We strongly recommend taking a decent first aid kit with plenty of antiseptic cream - it is important to ensure any cuts and grazes are kept clean and free from infection. Be vigilant when swimming/snorkelling off the end of the jetty. Local boats travelling past often come quite close to the jetty. I suggested to the staff that they investigate some 'Orange Flag' procedure that warns people in boats that there are guests in the water.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The accommodation, bar and restaurant are crafted from local wood and blend-in with the environment. Every effort has been made to provide comfortable surroundings without spoiling the rainforest. The resort is kept very clean and the team have made an effort to replant in open areas. The presence of monkeys, monitor lizards, bats, giant centipedes and a whole variety of sea life suggests that the resort is not adversely impacting the local wildlife and environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Our children 11 and 13 years old have so many stories to tell and will have memories that last a lifetime. They were never bored and were able to amuse themselves without constant adult supervision - this along with the breathtaking surroundings, the amazing staff & the abundant wildlife made our holiday the most relaxing and enjoyable vacation we have had to date. We will be back one day soon without a doubt.

Book early, and take reading material.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

From the sea only the jetty gives any real clue that the cove is developed at all, a lot of effort has clearly been made to make as little impact as possible to the appearance of the beachfront.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A fantastic holiday, in a fantastic location made even better by the warm and friendly faces who make your stay so comfortable. There are plenty of hotels in beautiful, secluded locations but there is only one place like this, you arrive as a patron and leave as a friend.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I went to this resort with my girlfriend and we had an incredible time. The whole experience of our stay was memorable in itself. There are so many different components that made this such a great holiday. To account just a few, the arrival on the plane at Tioman is very dramatic breath taking as is the journey by speed boat to the resort. I was taken a back by the unspoilt beauty of the island untainted by over commercialisation. The accommodation is charming, not five star but just right to give the feel that you are living amongst an unspoilt island - the feeling of going to sleep and hearing the sounds of the ocean on one side and rainforest on the other is quite magical. The food is delicious, especially the dinner menu. The fact that all decisions are taken away from you with regards to other restaurants makes the holiday that extra bit relaxing and I also looked forward to supper at the end of a hassle free day knowing that it was going to be delicious. The beach itself is picture postcard with tall palm tree dotted along the expansive beach to provide shade when required from the sun. The activities are brilliant - the trips to the waterfalls and snorkelling are a real memory with amazing photos to match. Added events such as the barbecue and fire on the beach were really special. I liked that at the end of your holiday all you have to worry about is paying a relatively cheap bar bill. Finally, the staff are awesome and appear more as friends than people who pester you - my drink was always full if I wanted it to be and they were always on hand to help in any way required. A top holiday full with many memories and I have no doubt that we will both return in the not to distant future.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This is a fantastic place and you need to let yourself totally go. It is not action packed with a million and one things to do but will suit people who want to totally unwind and relax. I couldn't fault it from that perspective and I left sad to go but fully recharged - definitely the most relaxing holiday ever. A number of tips. Take a few good books with you, bring beach shoes to walk in the sea with as there is coral and rocks in places, if you like to snack during the day be aware that the resort serves three meals a day with no hot food to snack on during the day. Finally, relax and take the days as they come. For families I would say that it does not suit small children as there are some dangers such as the jetty, rocks in the sea etc. This should not be a reason not to go but parents should be aware that they would never be able to totally take their eyes off them. As a child though, I could imagine loving the place as there is so much to see in terms of wildlife and sea life.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I felt as though the island of Tioman is unspoilt by excessive commercialisation. The resort encapsulates the minimal impact to the environment around you. The huts and even the jetty were all made of wood and woven palm leaves. There is basically no concrete in sight which I loved. We both felt as though we were part of the environment and not destroying it.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Five full stars. The best holiday ever and we both left feeling totally rejuvenated.
We will recommend it to all our friends and especially to couples. We are even thinking about getting a group of friends are hiring the whole place out. It was so memorable and we both intend to return again. The staff, accommodation, experience, weather and food is top draw. We loved it!!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We loved everything about this place. The location, the accommodation, the friendly staff and the food were all beyond our expectations. Highlights were snorkeling, the trek to the waterfall and the beach barbeque. In the village we ran into a large group of locals, soldiers and royals (turned out to be the King). About a 100 people in total all smiling and saying hello and asking where we were from. Felt like the friendliest place on earth.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We only stayed for 3 nights and that was not long enough. Another night of two may have been sufficient. Bring suitable footwear for walking on the coral sea bed and for trekking through the jungle.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes absolutely. We were obviously welcomed by the local people from the encounter above and our energy consumption was minimal.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

These few days were part of a holiday which included Singapore and Cambodia. The whole experience was wonderful but only this part was relaxing and stress free. Initially I worried about the lack of air conditioning and biting insects. In fact, this was the coolest accommodation of our trip as the fan distributed the sea breeze very efficiently and quietly and we weren't troubled by any insects either.

Incredible, I would highly recommend it.....but on second thoughts the peace and quiet of the place is so special that it must never be ruined by too many visitors or developers.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't bother taking towels! As they supply everything. Although some of the masks and snorkels need replacing it may be an idea to take your own.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Most definitely, the staff working there were largely from the local community, and it was owed by local people and others from outside. Certainly it seemed to have a low impact on the environment unlike other larger resorts that are on the island.

Waking up every morning, opening the shutters and watching the monkeys go on their daily trip past our jungle house. Swimming with my niece and son in the sea late afternoon. They loved watching the fish and crabs around them and jumping off the jetty. Then later sitting in the restaurant with my son and having a hot chocolate, whilst watching the monitor lizards come out of the stream.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Stay for at least a week to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the place. Turn off your mobile phones and get away from it all!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

It definitely had minimal impact, as no air conditioning and accommodation built into the jungle. All wildlife allowed to live around the resort with minimal impact on them.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Firstly it was an amazingly beautiful place which we'll always remember. The staff we're really friendly and always there if you needed anything. One of my favourite things was a trip round the island with lots of snorkelling! The food was also amazing, my husband has severe allergies and so being on a remote island without a hospital we were slightly nervous but the staff were amazing and if there was ever anything which may have affected him, they made him his own dish, seperately from the rest of the guests.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It's not a buzzing resort if that's the sort of holiday you're looking for. There is plently to do but some of it you have to be prepared to sort out yourself, although the staff would be happy to point you in the right direction or offer advice if they couldn' help directly. Very relaxing place!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I think so, most of the staff were local people, including the cook, who cooked amazing local dishes! All the food was local produce. It seemed all very real experience of the island culture, when we went around the island we ate in local cafes, which produced local tasty dishes!

Malaysia beach resort photo from Sally The accommodation was wonderful and all we'd hoped for, and rather amusingly we shared the place with another honeymooning couple who got married on the same day as us so it is obviously a very romantic place!!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Having dinner on the beach at night by a bonfire. You'd have to pay loads at a luxury resort for something like that! They also shut the resort down one day so all of us could go out on a couple of boats for a trip round the island, stopping at local villages, stopping for snorkelling at the best reefs, etc. A brilliant day!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Just that, if you're getting the flight from KL to Tioman, you'll need to be aware that the flight goes from Subang airport, not KLIA. It makes quite a difference to the journey and we weren't aware of this until we did most of the booking.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, because the resort is so small, it makes minimum impact, not having to deal with large numbers of guests regarding laundry and cooking etc plus it's right at the edge of the forest, minimising damage to the flora and fauna. Plus most of the staff were local, which was fantastic.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The entire holiday was wonderful and it's hard to specify the best part when the whole stay was so magical. However, one of the most memorable experiences must have been the round the island trip together with the other guests and staff. Snorkelling was never my thing before Tioman but this time round it was hard to keep me out of the water. I think that the staff also deserves a special mention - never before have I come accross such easy going, helpful staff. So many thanks for Yono, Naomi and Yohann!!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This accommodation is pretty secluded so if you are looking for lively night life with loads of bars and discos this is not your scene. However, if you (like me) are looking for beautiful surroundings, comfortable accommodation, great snorkelling, yummy food and fun loving staff this is the place to go to.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

There was recycling (though it could also be extended to guest accommodation) and most of the food was bought locally. It was possible to drink the water from the tab so there was no need to purchase bottled water.

4. Any other comments?

I'm happy to share my holiday experience - after all it is not many times that I've had such a perfect holiday! I will definitely look your web site up again next time I'm planning a holiday. 2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Make sure you take surfing shoes if you like to walk/swim in the sea. The floor of the sea is completely carpeted in coral so you can't walk in the sea on barefoot!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I think so yes, the nature of the holiday is a completely castaway holiday so we didn't see loads of the impact but there was minimum impact on the environment, I didn't see anything I thought could have a negative impact on the environment as it was completely eco-friendly.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The most memorble part of the holiday has to be when I proposed to my girlfriend on the beach. That day we had trekked through the jungle seeing such sites as giant squirrels, monkeys and lizards on route to a beautiful waterfall and had the most refreshing swim ever when we arrived. Although I had planned to propose I had been waiting for the right moment.... After such a lovely day and the usual wonderful dinner it just felt like the right time and after a few happy tears my girlfriend said YES!

We have so many special memories of this accommodation that there's to much to mention but I need to mention more. You can snorkel off the beach and see wonderful marine life including baby reef sharks, all manner of brightly coloured fish, coral and most impressively, turtles. The BBQ which we had on the beach was fantastic, all the guests dined together with a bonfire glowing nearby in the back ground. Once everyone had finished eating we where treated to seranade by Farius the chef and Yono who appeared with thier guitars, the rest of the nght was spent with everyone sitting on the beach enjoying a few drinks singing with the sound of the waves behind us.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take a camera with plenty of memory as there is so much to capture, you'll need it!! If you are like my girlfriend who is vegetarian then you will have no problem, the food was absolutely fantastic, no veggie lasagne here!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

This accommodation has been constructed in such a respectful and sympathetic way that it lives at one with the enviroment and wildlife that surrounds it. The local people that work at and run the retreat are so friendly and helpful that you couldn't ask for more.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The most exciting and memorable part of the trip was snorkelling with a sea turtle she was only a baby lying at the bottom of the sea bed, she knew we were there but didn't seem to bother her. She saw straight toward me and up for a breath of air and swam just below me for what seemed like hours. Every day we saw different wildlife, I found it hard to concentrate on my books because you didn't want to miss any wildlife. When I was lying on the beach watching the black squirrel hanging from a branch and eating fruit upside down looking back at me that's when I thought to myself I'm in paradise. The food was freshly cooked every day and my partner and I never once suffered from any jittery stomachs because of the fresh produce and water.

The place has a special spiritual ambiance to it that makes you feel at peace and you can't do anything other than relax.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Tips would be to take lots of mosquito repellent especially for women because of having less hair so mossy's can bite and turn all the lights off in and even outside of villa because it attracted insects (took us about 4 days to work this one out). There are 3 chalets and it would be nice to take all my family out there and rent the whole resort out.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

It would have been nice to see solar panelling but it's an isolated island and that would have been expensive to fit.

The resort manager (Yohanne) trained the workers up to recycle anything which was stored and a recycling boat came once a year to take it away. Even the water bottles were used again as the water was fresh from the stream.

4. Any other comments?

From the first time my boyfriend and I looked at the website and saw the first breath taking picture of the resort, I got really emotional and knew that's where I wanted to go.

It's got to be 5 stars for me because even if you stay there for 2 nights or 2 weeks, you'll never forget the friendly staff, beautiful scenery and animals. From sea eagles to flying foxes to pythons to the hundreds of species of butterfly. Thank you to this accommodation and Responsible travel, I hope to return with the Whittaker-Beasley family!!!

Be prepared for the total isolation! There is no permanent telephone line on this part of the island, except at the end of the jetty where only the local lines work. Time to relax, reflect, work undisturbed, reconnect with the Spirit!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We really enjoyed the snorkelling and it was amazing to get to swim with a turtle!
But to be honest everyday we sat down at dinner over looking the beach and the ocean and said to each other 'that was a good day!'

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you want peace and quite then this is the place for you so don't book it if you want some nightlife as it isn't that kind of holiday. As there are no shops so bring everything you might possibly need as we nearly ran out of toothpaste.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The local team were amazing, really friendly and cooked gorgeous food. We spoke to Yono one of the owners quite a lot while we were there about the rereat and it was clear to see that one of his main concerns was preserving the beautiful surrounds which is why there are only a few huts to stay in so that it does not have to great an impact on the environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We wanted to go and relax somewhere for our honeymoon but also to be part of nature and really get away from it all and that is exactly what we got. The pictures on the website just don't do it justice. The resort is stunning with a white sandy beach, good food, lovely staff and clear waters. We lay on the beach, snorkelled, ate and drank beer, really a perfect holiday.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The food was exceptional with both a local and western chef providing an excellent variety of tasty dishes. The snorkelling was great with snorkelling at the resort and the option to go on snorkelling trips. Really relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Was able to have a yoga class and a massage in a great setting

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We only stayed three nights and wished we had booked longer.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Definitely. There is plenty of wildlife around which must indicate that the resort is not too intrusive. Local people are employed and the chalets blend in well to the general surroundings.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The resort was just what we were looking for after a quite hectic couple of weeks travelling around. All the staff, Conrad, Jenny and Krishna and the local staff were really friendly as were the guests we met during our stay. I would recommend this resort for anyone looking to get away from it all. Having said that there are trips available so you can have the option of doing nothing or keeping active during your stay.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The resort location! This is definitely the place to go if you just want chill time. You have your own beach and it’s just peaceful. You can only get there by boat so it's away from all motors and noise. The snorkeling was one of the best things. The sea life is just amazing and there were a few small sharks too.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you fly from KL, go to Subang airport not KLIA. Telephone reception is very limited and there is no TV or internet. The sea is a bit rocky but crystal clear water.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The resort is a place on its own and you don't see many people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We had a very chilled time. It was good to get away from our busy city lives.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The complete relaxation, intimate nature and warm welcome in a truly beautiful setting.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be aware that the accommodation does not have air conditioning. In spite of this, Rock House where we stayed was not too hot at night, as the wind blows off the sea. Also, it is quiet. Perfect for us, as that was what we were looking for but some people may want more activity.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

There was not much contact with local people other than the staff and they all seemed very happy. The resort was definitely focused on conserving resources (switches to have hot showers if you want... we never did as showering under cold water was a relief with the heat. The jungle area around the resort is not in the best state with litter noticeable all through our walks.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely perfect! Thanks to the management and staff!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

When we stepped off the speedboat at the end of the jetty and walked hand in hand towards the bar for our welcome drink taking in the vastness of the mountain and jungle backdrop behind (in my opinion) the best beach on the island. Jurassic Park mixed with Indiana Jones sprang to mind - we couldn't wait to explore!!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take a torch and a hand held fan with you for those night time power cuts. Also I would recommend taking you own snorkelling gear unless you want to miss out on a days snorkelling as their equipment is a tad tatty and there isn’t enough to go round if they are on max capacity. Also you MUST take a pair of shoes to wear in the sea or you won’t be able to swim at low tide.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The staff this year were a mix of the resident local family / owners and Malaysians / Norwegian / French and Canadian. Therefore not really going all out to recruit the locals of Tioman Island itself. The inclusive trip to Mukut keeps a flow of tourists through the village but there are only 2 shops there. I must say I did wonder where the speedboats that took the resorts rubbish away went to .....???

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic! Exactly what we expected and a wonderful experience. We couldn't fault the attentiveness of the staff. It’s not a 5, 4 or 3 star resort by any means but doesn’t purport to be either. It’s an experience - where else can you eat breakfast whilst being entertained by monkeys & share the beach with 5ft monitor lizards whilst watching eagles soar above you?! We felt privileged to have sampled the resort - and at such a perfect time too. Come the end of the May the diggers move into the 13 acre plot adjoining the restaurant, and before long there will be 20 houses and a new marina next door, complete with a helicopter launch pad.

Read the operator's response here:

I'm pleased to hear Alexandra had a fantastic experience with us. The blackout experience was unfortunate as usually the island electricity supply is more reliable. With reference to the comment on the development next door, at this stage it is a proposed development and no plans are finalised. Should they go ahead with development over the coming years, we are happy to have new neighbours who are willing to adopt the same principles of environmental protection and build relatively small numbers of chalets on what is a large area of land.

The bags she saw being removed were for recycling which will be sold by locals to the mainland per kilo together with similar glass, tin, aluminium and plastic materials from Mukut village. Normally someone comes directly from the mainland to take this but the weather was not suitable in late February before we opened again. We have always searched for local staff in advance of taking any foreign or mainland staff - we have more Malaysians on site than foreigners, and please bear in mind that local Muslims are not allowed to sell alcohol so we are quite limited in terms of finding serving staff.

We were lucky to arrive at the resort at high tide which meant our 1st view of the resort was when it was at it's best - and it's best is just stunning. A beautiful part of the world, the resort is lovely and the hosts looked after us well.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Pay in advance for the accommodation - other guests didn't while we were there and had hassle withdrawing sufficient cash locally to cover it.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Not really - some food was local, and a couple of staff were local, but the resort is tiny. Its environmental impact is low, although it seems a shame that all power is off the grid in such a sunny place.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

One of our best - Tioman will be remembered for a long time - beautiful place and I've already recommended it to all I've spoken to since I got back.

This accommodation was fab! exactly "what it said on the tin". It looked just like the pics - the accommodation was beautiful, good food, lovely beach, relaxing, not touristy - we had a great time. 6 nites is probably enough as there's nothing to do. The worse thing is that they don't take credit cards so you have to arrive with piles of cash or pay in advance.

Definitely snorkling with sharks and turtles straight of the jetty!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't count on doing too much: the place is extremely well suited for a relaxing holiday. Snorkling, reading, an occasional boat trip, and a small hike to a local waterfall, that's about where you get up to.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Some locals were working there, so yes, in a way it must have benefited local people. But I didn't get the impression that locals were really trained or that much thought had gone in this issue. The way the resort was built, it definitely minimized impacts on the environment. Nice wooden buildings, nicely blending in with the forrest.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very high. Friendly people, very comfortable housing, an amazing island and fantastic wildlife. Only recommendations I can think of to make it even a better place:
-more comfortable sitting options: pillows for the stretchers/beds, and better chairs for in the bar.
-Cooking wasn't spectacular: great local food (especially at night), however 'European' items on lunch menu (pizza's, burgers, etc.) and especially the breakfast where a bit below-par I think.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There are so many fantastic memories of the trip. Taking the boat ride from the airport, slipping through the blue water and marvelling at the outstanding beauty of the jungle clad Island. The first sight of the paradise that this is. The excellent accommodation built so harmoniously with the natural surroundings. The warm welcome, the great and inexpensive cocktails, the excellent food, the trek along coast and through the forest to a luscious waterfall where we played in the cooling water. Dining on the beach around a campfire. Swimming with a shark, and simply relaxing in a way you would not feel possible. Romantic in the extreme.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This accommodation is very much about blending with your natural environment. As such your accommodation (though beautifully fitted and perfectly well equipped) is partially open to the jungle. There is no airconditioning and you sleep under mosquito nets. If you are after an airconditioned cocoon then this is not for you. If you want to completely escape your normal life and are prepared to adapt to the surroundings and the very chilled pace, then I can't think of a better way.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

This accommodation has a policy of low environmental impact. No aircon goes a long way and certainly the traditionally influenced Malay style buildings fit in very well with the surroundings. Waste is recycled, I noticed that in the neighbouring villages there is a government recycling scheme which I presume the accommodation uses. We did spend money in the villages on local artefacts and food.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was the first real travelling I have done with my young family (8 and 10 years old). It has got my kids hooked by the travel bug. None of us wanted to leave. Utterly brilliant. The only reason I can't tick "simply the best holiday I have been on" is that I have been on many holidays in places that are totally different so it would be like comparing apples and oranges. This is however up there with the other best holidays I have been on.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Read the tips from other travellers, no need to pack heavy, take scuba boots or good sandals for use to get into the sea as it is a coral shore. Send any food requirements in advance. Remember that the international to local airport is 1 hour away.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I felt that there was a conscious effort made to preserve the local habitat, however it is not a uniform policy that is enforced across the island. This needs to be done by a committee of all main island parties.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Our holiday was one of the best places we have been to, the people were generous and welcoming, and the place was amazing and well thought out. The only improvement should be to the variety on the menus especially for snacks; this was poor and limited to Tuna. This accommodation remember 2 things people want, Drink and food - the later being the most important. Also there was a lack of fresh fruit.

Also employ more table service than self service, ensure that Breakfast is clear of ants, ensure that the coffee is better not stewed, utilise warming candles under serving dishes to keep the food warm during meals. Despite this we would certainly come back

Bring lots of books! As there are no roads you're pretty much limited to the beach, chalet and bar but when it's as beautiful as this you won't mind at all...

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Having glimpsed the main resort on the island made us appreciate the low impact aspect at this accommodation. The all-wooden chalets are simple yet stylish and with a maximum of twelve guests, it's never going to feel crowded. This means it's not a major employer of local people but you do get to mix socially with the staff in a way you wouldn't in a hotel, for example.

Good, but the sea was quite choppy (due to a southern wind that came along) when we were there so we didn't really get to go out for an excursion at all, which was quite a shame. Apparently, the best time to go is during the inter-monsoon season around March/April and Sept/Oct.

Read the operator's response here:

In conversations Karen suggested that the review would have been 4/5 star had the weather been better and her family had been able to go on boat trips to other parts of the island. Unfortunately, unpredictable weather is now a phenomenon we face around the world, but for guests staying for a week or longer the chances of having good weather are substantially higher than short stay only guests.
