Sicily hotel in Milazzo, independent reviews

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Climbing the cape of the 'Santuario' near the hotel, and having a breathtaking view of the Eolian islands and the entire Milazzo peninsula with its magnificent beach and castle in the background. And joining in the early evening 'passegiata' of people strolling along by the harbour- a real buzz continuing till late at night.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Go off-season. We did, in mid-September, and although it was still very hot- 34 degrees- the beach was virtually empty.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The hotel was family-run- we got quite friendly with one of the owners and her little girl, who liked to help out in the restaurant- so was not owned by some impersonal chain. There was no air-conditioning in the public areas, instead it was designed so that the sea breeze wafted right through the building into the courtyard. All the food was locally sourced, and very good. The decor was very original, with murals and other art-works by local artists. Each room had an individually-decorated door!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Our stay in Milazzo was only part of a longer trip to Sicily, and we enjoyed it all, but Milazzo was definitely a highlight.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The beach in front of the hotel is superb - the water is crystal clear and the views are superb.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Learn Italian! The hotel staff were really helpful and friendly, but outside the front door we found that in this part of Sicily, there was very little English spoken. This was good in a way, but make sure you have your phrase book handy!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

All the staff were local, so yes, I think so. We ate at the local restaurants (excellent food and wine), but getting to the airport was tricky (Palermo is quite some distance). Once there, we walked most of the time.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Really good - the only minor downside is the noise from the road next to the hotel (can't hear it when the doors are shut), but the view from the balcony makes up for it.
