Brazil river dolphins conservation holiday, independent reviews

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Sitting on the porch of the floating house and listening to the sounds of the jungle; during the day the gentle blow of the pink dolphins as they glided along the river, then later the howler money, at dusk the frogs and insects. And, slightly worrying, in the middle of the night the enormous splashes that suggested that something was perhaps being eaten! I have never been to a place where there was such an abundance of life - everywhere you looked there was something to see.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Pack lots of books and expect to live life at an incredibly slow pace. Its takes a few days to relax into the environment - I really did spend at least half of every day simply watching the river go by - so don't expect too much activity. Only take this holiday if you love boats and the water, I only set foot on dry land during the weekends.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The holiday is based at a research project in a nature reserve. The project clearly benefited the research, both financially and because volunteers learn about the conservation issues in the area. Environmental impact was minimised, the floating house is an amazing piece of eco friendly design using solar power and rainwater. Contact with local people was low as this was conservation holiday.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was a great way of experiencing the Amazon and the wildlife that lives there while learning about the pink river dolphins.
