Canouan is the third inhabited island in the chain that stretches south like the tail of a child's kite from St Vincent. It is twenty-five miles from Kingstown and serviced by both a ferry and regular flights.
Much of the five square mile island has been taken over by two private resorts, Raffles Resort and Tamarind Beach Hotel, together with an 18-hole golf course and a casino. The island's only village, Retreat, is home to most of the 2000 local people living on Canouan.
The highest peak, Mount Royal climbs to 240 meters, its slopes are forested mainly with indigenous white cedar trees.
There are two main bays, Glossy and Friendship, but many other small coves of linen-white sands abound.
