June and July sees the whole country turn out again for Carnival. The streets are alive with music; Calypso, Soca, Pan (steel drum bands), concerts and competitions, costume parades, pageantry, food and some very fun times. Carnivals are packed with historical meaning and cultural pride. The festival provides fantastic entertainment for all the family with acts and shows such as the King and Queen of the Bands, Junior Carnival, the Miss Carnival Beauty Show, Steel Band and Calypso competitions and all kinds of different street parades.
The largest, Vincy Mas is on St Vincent, but each of the inhabited islands in the Grenadines also has its own Carnival.
"Carnival is our culture. It is the way of life of our people. Not only for the young but the very old. And believe me, we participate!"
Ashford Wood, C.E.O. of the Carnival Development Corporation
And that is the secret of Carnival for any visitors who are in St Vincent and the Grenadines: get involved. You are welcome to participate too, and if you do you will have an experience of a lifetime.
"Dress up in a costume. If you think you are good enough, get on the stage and sing."
Ashford Wood, C.E.O. of the Carnival Development Corporation
