Responsible tourism: Letchworth State Park rafting trips in New York State, USA
William Pryor Letchworth was an incredible humanitarian and Preservationist. Upon finding the property that would become the cornerstone for what we now know as "Letchworth State Park", he worked tirelessly for the duration of his life to not only re-establish the natural beauty of the area but to allow unfettered access for all to share in it. For the past 30 years we have continued in those footsteps.
We shall be wise stewards of the rivers we paddle, caring for them as well as the habitats of the indigenous flora and fauna that reside along their banks. Recent projects include assisting NYSDEC Biologists in the reintroduction of river otters within the gorge at Letchworth State Park as well as the ongoing tracking/tagging of the Eastern Mountain Timber Rattlesnake population.
We utilize "no-trace" practices on all our river trips, with an emphasis on "carry-in and carry-out" of all guest amenities. Any trash that has migrated from upstream and can safely be removed from the river habitat is. The largest (and strangest) item cleared from the gorge so far has been a 200 lb. propane tank (yeah, it amazed us too).
We have been a locally owned small business since our inception in 1981 and will continue to be, proudly so. We view ourselves as but a piece of the puzzle that draw tourists from all over the world to the beauty that is Letchworth State Park.
Over the past 30+ years we have been able to build long-established relationships with many of our business partners, most of whom are known to us on a first-name basis. As a result, we are able to make recommendations for just about any aspect of your trip to our area, from the Greater Niagara Frontier to the Finger Lakes Region of New York State.
Our commitment to the communities we serve is well-documented. Scholarships are available to organizations wishing to paddle with us that present a financial need. We also donate our time and financial resources to various local charities, environmental causes, and ministries. The "Mom & Me Retreat" allows single mothers and their children a weekend of fellowship, outdoor adventure, and the chance to be filled with His love. The annual "Act of Kindness" raft trip brings in cases of non-perishable food donations to several local food pantries each year. As Kevin likes to say; "I'm just trying to be the best pencil I can be in His hand."
