Esperance day tours, Bay of Isles cruise, Western Australia
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
Composting toilets: All toilets used on at the Woody island visitor centre for cruise passengers are composting units that are proving to be very successful with almost nil water usage. Worms and sawdust are replaced at regular intervals. Existing cistern toilets have been replaced with dual flush systems to minimise water usage. We also encourage minimal water wastage by supplying hand gel as an alternative. We assist with wildlife protection with local environmental groups and as Woody Island is an A-class nature reserve there are strict guidelines that must be adhered to.
We have introduced many initiatives to help us closely monitor and minimise our impact on the environment. On board our cruise ship MV Seabreeze IV, these include:
- Non-smoking vessel at all times, this includes afternoon/evening charters.
- Rubbish bins placed on all levels.
- China cups used when serving tea/coffee.
- Charters: special, blue recycling bins put onto the boat for guests to dispose of their bottles and cans responsibly.
Community
Being part of smaller community, we support many sporting group/charities and fundraisers with donations. We also support many groups that come on our cruises to Woody Island for research and education. The majority of our employees are local and have a broad knowledge of the Esperance region. We train staff ourselves and use local produce as much as possible.
We cater for school groups for snorkelling trips, outdoor education camp and leadership camps. Bushrangers work alongside Department of Conservation and Land Management to help maintain Woody Island trails. The Conservation Council monitor the fairy penguins found on the eastern side of the island and also the fleshy footed shearwater colonies and SW Birding Group comes to view rare bird species that are only found in limited areas of Australia.
