Grizzly Bear viewing in Bella Coola, Canada
How Grizzly Bear viewing in Bella Coola, Canada makes a difference
Environment
As a biologist team of husband and wife, we do everything in our power to protect the grizzly bears, their habitat and promote their wonderful existence to the world, so we can all protect them. This includes working with other operators to develop and implement sustainable management plans, including limiting numbers of guests, reducing numbers of boats on the river and timing our tours to interrupt bear behaviour as little as possible.
Our bear watching tours are possibly the only ones in North America where the guide rides a bicycle back to the launch site to recover the transport vehicle, cutting our fuel consumption in half of using a second vehicle. By doing this simple act we eliminate $180 km of driving to and fro the tour site each day.
On our tours all rubbish is carried away; however, our use of thermos bottles, durable re-usable cups and fresh fruit and baking literally reduce packaging to zero, so there is no rubbish other than fruit peels and tea bags, which we gladly compost in out garden.
At our lodge our main building and outbuildings and cabins are built from re-purposed material, including driftwood and salvaged wood products from other renovations and projects.
Community
Working in our community we employ local staff, guides, and resources at our lodge, at our tour company and during our biological consulting projects. We also volunteer our time on numerous ecological sustainability boards and committees and local Search and Rescue.
As a registered professional biologist in BC I sit on various committees that promote ecosystem based management, conservation of resources and interaction with advocacy and conservation groups.
We source local produce, meats, and foodstuffs for our restaurant at our lodge, including our own organic garden, and promote 'predator friendly' livestock and eggs from local producers; ensuring natural wildlife is not subject to repression from our garnishing of local products...
At our lodge and on our tours we are constantly informing guests of the little cultural and ecological aspects of our community and ecosystem that so many visitors miss on larger tours. From the doorstep to the rainforest, we try to lessen our footprint so others can enjoy this area as well...
