Environment
Water is our most precious resource in South Africa. We actively encourage people to take care of their water usage while staying in Cape Town and encourage drinking our tap water (some of the best in the world) rather than pollute the environment with bottled water. Being a cycling company means that we try to cycle everywhere as much as possible, thereby reducing our carbon emissions. Africa is synonymous with wildlife and Cape Town is an urban environment with some fantastic areas of wilderness close by. We often see porcupines, caracal (lynx), snakes and an amazing array of bird life on our rides. We report our sightings to the local scientific body for record keeping so that more accurate analysis of data can help preserve the wildlife in the area. We teach riders and our guides to conserve the environment we are cycling through. Leaving only footprints (tyre tracks, rather) and promoting good riding techniques are essential to promoting the sport of mountain biking to landowners.
Community
One of the highlights of South Africa is the sense of community that is experienced here. iRide Africa wants to encourage our sense of community and makes sure that we support the local community wherever possible-from small one person businesses that create our beaded logo to our cycle guides that are young, up and coming cyclists looking for a way to make a living on their bikes. We recommend the best local restaurants to eat at (they have the best food anyway!) and we support our small but growing group of craft breweries. We outsource our catering to local families with the best recipes to keep us happy and energised on the bike and are active participants in making sure Cape Town becomes a better and friendlier city to cycle in. After all, if we can convert our car-centric society to adopt the bike as a viable means of transport then life is going to be better for all of us!
