introduction to Costa Rica honeymoons
Beautiful scenery, pristine sandy beaches, lush forests and gardens teaming with scented flowers – Costa Rica has in abundance all the ingredients for the ideal honeymoon.
We have hand-picked the accommodation in this itinerary with seclusion, relaxation and romance in mind. Your trip starts with a relaxing stay at a spa resort overlooking Costa Rica’s Central Valley. Here you can explore extensive waterfall gardens and visit Poas Volcano. You then fly to the flooded forests of Tortuguero National Park on the north Caribbean coast - one of the very best places in Costa Rica to see wildlife. From the water, the forest presents a lush wall of green, a dense tangle of palms, mimosa, wild almond and morning glory, a sanctuary rich with food for many animals. You can expect to see sloths hang motionless in the trees, family troupes of mantled howler monkeys and white-faced and capuchin monkeys picking delicately at fruiting trees. By the water’s edge watch out for green herons, Basilisk or Jesus Christ lizards, caimans and river otters. You will then move over to the Pacific coast for rest and relaxation at a beach hotel of your choice.
December - April is a short, well defined dry season which is the high season for travel to Costa Rica.
May - November is the rainy season, called the 'green season'. Some visitors choose to travel during the green season as the country is quieter, the scenery is fresher and greener, prices can be lower, and there are added bonuses, e.g. this is the time when turtles come to their favourite beaches to lay their eggs. In the green season the mornings are almost always clear and warm, and the afternoons are cooled by rains which fall in strong bursts typically lasting an hour or two. The clouds usually clear in time for a magnificent sunset. The rains are heaviest in September and October. We do not recommend travelling to Costa Rica in these two months.

best time to go
Costa Rica is in the tropics, so temperatures are fairly constant all year round, just varying with altitude. It has two seasons:December - April is a short, well defined dry season which is the high season for travel to Costa Rica.

day-by-day itinerary
| Day 1: | Alajuela. You are met on arrival at the airport in San José and taken to a 4* hotel set in the midst of a 40-acre coffee and fruit plantation overlooking Costa Rica’s Central Valley. Stay for 3 nights to take advantage of the hotel’s numerous spa facilities and relaxing atmosphere. |
| Day 2: | Free day. A free day to relax at the hotel. Surrounded by delightful gardens and picturesque waterfalls, the hotel offers a range of pampering treatments in your own private Jalapa (palm-roofed hut), complete with Jacuzzi and stunning views of the valley. The outdoor restaurant sources its food from the fruits, vegetables and herbs of the plantation’s gardens. |
| Day 3: | Volcán Poás & La Paz Waterfall Gardens. This morning a private English-speaking local guide takes you to visit Poás Volcano. The journey passes through lush coffee cultivation regions then cloud forest up to the stunted trees and bush on the volcano’s slopes. Walk to the crater’s lip to peer down onto the hot aquamarine lake below. Afterwards visit the Waterfall Gardens at La Paz, where there is also a butterfly observatory and hummingbird feeders. Return to your hotel where you have the rest of the afternoon at leisure. |
| Day 4: | Tortuguero. This morning you are taken to the airport to catch a flight to the flooded forest of Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast. You are collected on arrival at the airstrip and transferred the short distance by boat to your lodge, set among landscaped gardens on the bank of the river near the national park. Stay for 2 nights on a full board basis. |
| Day 5: | Boat ride. Take a boat ride through the narrow river channels of the flooded forest today for the chance of seeing a host of wildlife including monkeys, tiger herons, sloth, River Otter and caiman. You could also visit the wild local beach, where sea turtles nest between July and October. |
| Day 6-11: | Pacific coast. After an early breakfast you are taken by boat back to the airstrip for your flight to San José. Change planes and fly onwards to the Pacific coast and your choice of beach hotel. Spend the next 5 days relaxing on the stunning beach. |
| Day 12: | San José. In the morning catch a flight back to San José where you stay overnight at a converted Victorian mansion. The 4* hotel has the feel of a private home, with art and furnishings crafted by Costa Rican artists. The garden suite has a wrought-iron king-sized bed, small patio terrace and private Jacuzzi. |

how this holiday makes a difference
|
As an in depth specialist tour operator to Costa Rica responsible tourism is at the very heart of what we do. To us, this means much more than a simple donation to a charity for each client. We try to build long and constructive involvements with local guides, guest houses, wildlife lodges, and hotels, in the course of which we, and our clients, can make lasting wide-ranging contributions to the wonderful places and people we engage with.
In this itinerary we use several lodges that fit with this philosophy perfectly, employing local guides and bringing long-term benefits to the local community. We are the first tour operator in the UK to form a partnership with the Rainforest Alliance to work towards the implementation of best management practices in sustainable tourism. In real terms this means that we are working with hotels who are making a positive impact on their local community – socially, environmentally and economically. Outlined below are hotels we use that employ sustainable tourism methods: Xandari’s goal is to diminish the environmental impact of their hotel operations and to protect the invaluable natural resources of the area. Xandari has a comprehensive recycling program. Waste byproducts are composted and used to fertilize the gardens. Fruits and vegetables are to a large extent grown organically. Laundry is dried outdoors in the sun as often as possible to conserve energy. They have a program to encourage and preserve the local culture of the surrounding villages. When the land where Xandari Resort is now located was purchased in 1989, the property was almost entirely planted with coffee, except for those areas too steep to harvest. There were few birds or butterflies as there were no trees, bushes or flowers to attract them. Slowly, they began to replace areas of coffee with trees and tropical plants in an effort to return the land closer to its natural state. As part of this effort, guests are invited to plant a native tree during their stay. As the many varieties of plants have grown and the gardens extended, increasing numbers of birds are now nesting. They research which trees, bushes and flowers especially attract, feed and provide shelter to the various types of birds and butterflies that inhabit Costa Rica and are constantly adding new varieties to their gardens. As part of their dedication to preserving the environment, a large area of the 40 acre property is being set aside in perpetuity as a nature reserve. Hotel Punta Islita has pioneered a Responsible Tourism programme that encourages the preservation of local cultures and rational use of natural resources. Community, art, responsibility and environment all underpin the Punta Islita Model. These are pivotal to the hotel´s unique charm and character. Many of these initiatives are important "regional firsts" and include a public library, a composting station, and a recycling programme. The most innovative feature of the Responsible Tourism Model is the visionary emphasis placed on creativity and the Islita Contemporary Art Museum. Self-expression has fostered a heightened sense of empowerment, optimism, and entrepreneurship. The nearby beach of Camaronal is the natural nesting area for hundreds of sea turtles. Threatened by poachers, their numbers had been dwindling at an alarming rate. In collaboration with the Costa Rican Ministry of Environment (MINAE), the Hotel provides resources to guarantee a safe haven during the egg-laying ritual and hatching period of these endangered creatures. The 50 acre area of tropical dry forest situated at the northeast of the Hotel’s property has been designated as a private reserve to promote the conservation and rehabilitation of local species, including the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macau), the Toledo bird (Chiroxipia linearis), and the Pochote tree (Pochota quinata). Hotel Punta Islita participates in the Costa Rican tourism board’s Certification in Sustainable Tourism program (CST). This initiative evaluates travel services companies according to their level of compliance with responsible tourism practices. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
