“Romania has always inspired an air of intrigue for me, and what could be better than the chance to explore all its mystery on this walking holiday! I’d definitely make the most of staying in the family-run guesthouse for the chance to learn more about the traditional way of life under the majestic Carpathian Mountains, and keep my eyes peeled for the bears and wolves on the long walks through the untouched forests.”

introduction to Carpathian Mountains conservation & culture holiday

One of the last remaining true wilderness areas in Europe can be found in the majestic Piatra Craiului Mountains of central Romania. For centuries the locals have existed in harmony with a rich variety of rare wildlife, including Europe's highest concentration of bears, wolves and lynx. Our days are spent on walks through spectacular canyons, virgin forests and Saxon villages. We stay in a guesthouse owned by a local family, providing a good standard of accommodation and delicious food. We visit the Beaver Reintroduction Programme and the former research centre for the Carpathian Large Carnivore Project, which is home to two hand-raised wolves, Poiana and Crai. There is also a chance to visit Bran Castle ('Dracula's Castle') and the mediaeval town of Brasov.

traveller reviews for Carpathian Mountains conservation & culture holiday

Every morning we opened the curtains to the most beautiful scene of the mountains and alpine meadows. The Romanian Carpathians are untouched and covered with wildlife and wild flowers. Our favorite thing was the visit to the Shepherd's camp. (more)

how this holiday makes a difference
As a part of our continued commitment to responsible tourism, we operate this trip in a way that aims to reduce impact and to give as much back as possible to the local community.

Our trip is carried out in close co-operation with the National Park Administration and local people from the communities of Zarnesti and Magura. On the day trips and walks the money goes straight to the local community. Horse and cart used for local travel. We work with a local operator and we use operator owned and managed accommodation on this trip. As local staff are employed and locally produced and sourced goods are bought for the accommodation we believe this is benefiting the wider community. The leaders will give a briefing on Responsible Tourism issues to help you understand how you can help reduce you impact and maximise the benefits to the local community The group size is limited to 15 to reduce cultural and environmental impacts

The local Community Development Fund initiates local projects with the aim to pass the benefits of a developing tourist industry to the local population, giving them an incentive to preserve the wilderness and promote sustainable economic activity. We have at our offices worked to reduce our carbon footprint through a reduction of energy use and energy conservation measures. We also actively try to reduce the waste produced by having active reduction and recycling policies in place. We run annual staff workshops on Responsible Tourism. Global warming is a reality and to help you make a difference by reducing the carbon dioxide that is produced when you travel we offer a chance to carbon balance your flights. We encourage all our clients to do this and do so for all our staff travel. Go on do your bit!

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
