introduction to Lapland adventure holiday

Deep inside the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland lies the magical Icehotel. The idea was born thirteen years ago out of an igloo housing ice artworks nd since then the crystal-clear ice of the nearby River Torne has provided a uniquely impressive design every year. From our base in the hamlet of Lappeasuando and in the vast wilderness areas all around, we enjoy this very special location with a week packed full of activities. This area is characterised by deep forests, frozen lakes and the extraordinary Northern Lights. We spend two days learning to drive our own dogsleds and one day on snowmobiles. We also build an igloo, and try the Nordic art of cross-country skiing. The range of simple accommodation is a real highlight - cosy lodge and wilderness camp with a wood-fired sauna, your own igloo (optional) and culminating with a memorable night in the stunning Icehotel.

how this holiday makes a difference
The whole ethos of an 'snow' holiday is about promoting lternative versions of winter tourism that use nature in its unspoilt condition, rather than seeking to alter it. We use small villages and family run hotels, chosen for their access to unspoilt mountain terrain, rather than number of lifts and resort facilities.

The popularity of the icehotel has given a boost to winter tourism all over Lapland. Previously areas that relied on their own nationals for winter income are now getting more visits from overseas clients, who stay for longer and spend more money. However most visits to the region are just for a couple of nights over a long weekend, on this trip you stay for a full week helping to provide weekly income from December to April.

We will ensure that our operations do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people so we ensure that our type and scale of tourism is appropriate to local conditions and operate within the limits set by local appropriate infrastructure and carrying capacity. We have teamed up with Friends of Conservation to support projects at Ranthambore, India, Nava Kiran Orphanage, Nepal and on the edge of the Masai Mara, Kenya.

We have at our UK offices worked to reduce our carbon footprint through a reduction of energy use and energy conservation measures. We also actively reduce the waste produced by having active reduction and recycling policies in place. We run annual staff workshops on Responsible Tourism.

Global warming is a reality and to help you make a difference by reducing the carbon dioxide that is produced when you travel we offer a chance to carbon balance your flights. We encourage all our clients to do this and do so for all our staff travel. Go on do your bit!

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
