introduction to Jordan cultural holiday
This trip focuses on the fascinating culture and history of the kingdom of Jordan, which goes back thousands of years and features many of the holy places in the biblical world. Jordan has much to offer the tourist from major archaeological sites such as the city of Petra to natural wonders such as the Dead Sea – the lowest point on Earth. This tour reveals some of this historic destination to the interested traveller, beginning at the Jordanian capital of Amman. You will travel in an air-conditioned coach with an English speaking guide and stay in comfortable hotels, eating at locally owned Jordanian restaurants serving traditional food. The whole trip bursts with historical and cultural interest to give you a true insight into this desert kingdom.
day-by-day itinerary
| Day 1: | Arrival at Amman International Airport where you will be greeted and assisted through Jordanian customs. Transfer to a city hotel for dinner & overnight. |
| Day 2: | On your second day, you will visit the Desert Castles and the hundred year old Kan Zaman village. Watch traditional craftsmen like glass blowers, jewellers and wood carvers practise their trade. There are a variety of shops that sell everything from spices to antiques. Return to Amman for dinner and overnight. |
| Day 3: | After breakfast you will go in a full day tour of Amman. Amman is the capital of Jordan and one of the most liberal cities in the Middle East. Its culture and art scene is thriving and numerous cultural centres, museums and traditional markets (souqs) can be found throughout the city. The tour continues to the Roman ruins at Jerash. Jerash is the most beautiful and well preserved Roman city in existence. Return to Amman for dinner and overnight. |
| Day 4: | Today you will go on a full day tour of the biblical sites in the River Jordan Valley. At the River Jordan you will see the spot identified as the location of Jesus Christ’s baptism by John the Baptist. The afternoon proceeds to the lowest point on Earth where you can bath in the waters of the Dead Sea – a totally unique experience. Return to Amman for dinner and overnight. |
| Day 5: | Visit the biblical site of Mt Nebo with its stunning views over the Holy Land before moving on to Petra. Dinner & Overnight in Petra. |
| Day 6: | A full day in the unique rose-red city of Petra. The tombs, palaces and treasury are literally hewn from the desert sandstone. The site is one of the most spectacular historic ruins of the world and was made famous by Hollywood during the Indiana Jones films. There is an option to do a horse ride in the afternoon. Dinner & Overnight in Petra. |
| Day 7: | A short drive to Wadi Rum – the valley of the moon. The local Bedouin will take you on a jeep safari into the desert. Continue to Aqaba to relax on the coast. Later the coach drives back along the Dead Sea Coast to Amman. Dinner & Overnight in Amman. |
| Day 8: | Transfer to Amman International Airport for a flight home. |

how this holiday makes a difference
|
All of the tour guides, drivers and support staff that operate this tour are Jordanian. These tours provide crucial income to the families and communities who help us run them. A minimum of 75% of the total income from the cost of this holiday remains in the country.
Many Bedouin families choose to live a traditional desert dwelling life-style. However, in the present day they also need an income, which can be provided through tourism. All our Jordan trips help local Bedouins by giving them regular work, either as jeep driver or camel guide, and paying them a fair daily wage. The majority of 3* or 4* hotels are small-scale and locally owned, so Jordanians benefit directly through hotel earnings and employment. The tour selectively uses locally owned restaurants and visits traditional Jordanian markets for gift shopping. For all of our tours we provide customers with an itinerary specific responsible travel guide aprox 4 weeks before they depart. This includes a generic travellers code of conduct which emphasises basic responsible travel advice – e.g. reduction of waste and consumption of natural resources, purchase local produce where possible etc. Our holidays are specifically designed to bring guests into direct contact with locals from a range of different tribes and cultures across Africa. We also therefore provide destination specific guidance including advice on local customs and some key phrases in certain languages (e.g. Swahili). We also offer guidance on how to barter responsibly for local curios and what curios should be avoided (e.g. certain wildlife artefacts such as coral, turtle shells etc.). As all of our guides and groundhandlers are local we also give guidance on what a fair and reasonable level of tipping would be at the end of the holiday. We support the work of Tourism Concern both in distributing their advice to customers and as an active participant in the Ethical Tour Operators Group. Our managing director sits on this group and is a regular attendee of meetings contributing to work towards developing industry wide fair trade standards. We also distribute materials to customers and make periodic donations for the following charities: Tree Aid; International Fund for Wildlife and Survival International Trust. In Southern Africa we support the Southern Africa Sustainable Seafood Initiative and forward their guidance to all customers on which seafood is sustainable when offered a choice at restaurants. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
