The community campsite creates a source of employment and income for local people. It creates skills and raises awareness of conservation and how to use natural resources sustainable. A saved percentage is used to support local community development projects, such as adult education and medical care.
The objectives are to: 1. Conserve and protect an invaluable tract of indigenous forest 2. Maintain a sustainable natural resource for community benefit 3. Enable the local community to benefit from tourism 4. Sensitise the community to the benefits of their natural environment. 5. Replant indigenous trees in previously farmed areas 6. Generate income for the benefit of community members The development programme organised the purchase of 20 acres of indigenous forest bordering the RMNP to be maintained and preserved for its natural value, rather than being cut for timber, and to earn money for the community from tourists paying to visit the area. The forest is conserved and local people benefit by being able to sustainably harvest seeds, forest products, and medicinal plants without irreversibly damaging the indigenous forest. Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
