introduction to Cycling holiday in Japan
Japan is such an eclectic mix of sights and sounds, landscapes, history and culture that it is a joy to experience. This cycling tour takes in the cultural centres of Kyoto and Nara, as well as the monastic Kyo-san mountain where Buddhism still thrives today.
Most of the cycling will be on Shikoku Island; through the central mountains, rivers and gorges of the Iya valley and alongside cliff top roads with views down upon Japan’s southern coast. Our final day's riding is sure to be a highlight as we island hop across several 100 metre-high bridges to the main island of Honshu. A day to soak up Hiroshima’s historical ambience. A fantastic cycling trip with unforgettable cultural experiences, we believe this trip has something for everyone.
Highlights include: Coastal bike tracks, ancient vine suspensions bridges, forests, mountains, Shinto temples, Geishas, tea ceremonies, rokans, hot springs, tepanyaki, sushi, Peace memorial, ancient capitals and a Buddhist mountain retreat.
Price details: includes all accommodation (twin share in hotels, monastery & ryokans), meals & transport as per the itinerary and cycling leader/mechanic. Bikes are also included in the trip cost; our specialised mountain bikes are entry-level standard with front suspension, 21 speed gears, ergonomic seat, off-road tyres, etc. Group size 4-12 people.

small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places. how this holiday makes a difference
|
On this cycling trip we prefer to utilise the services of smaller, locally, or family run ryokans (guesthouses). This provides a more intimate cultural experience that is uniquely Japanese with opportunities to gain an insight into the daily lives of Japanese people, the warmth of their hospitality and the charm of their dwellings. We employ the services of local Japanese as cycling guides and crew members who love nothing more than to share their knowledge for their country and the experience of travelling through it.
We visit and provide financial support to the historical Chiiori Farmhouse in the Iya valley on Shikoku Island. We will organise the entry tickets, home made traditional lunch and take part in an educational talk (when available) that provides information on the history of the building and objectives of this organisation. This project is one of the very few initiatives that seeks to preserve and document the traditional buildings and farming practices that are unique to this region of Japan. We visit Hiroshima’s War Memorial Park where we’ll invite one of the few surviving locals to talk about his experiences of the devastation the city and it’s people suffered after the atomic bomb was dropped and how it has shaped the thinking of it’s people – an unforgettable, sobering, but richly rewarding experience. We send out trip information booklets to all passengers on our trips before the trip has started to encourage all participants to start reading and learning about the country and region that you will be cycling through. The maximum group size for these trips is 12. This helps to preserve the experience as a more intimate. Big groups can be less personalised for the traveller and a little intimidating for the locals! |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
