introduction to Camel safaris in Tanzania
Experience the thrill of camel back-riding across the Tanzanian savannah, with a small group of friends (we are unable to organize long safaris for one person only but can arrange the one day safari to the baboon cave for single travellers) surrounded by tradition, wildlife and an outstanding scenery.
Camel safaris are the ultimate wilderness experience. They allow you to go deep into the heart of the bush where you can observe closely giraffes, zebras and many other animals without sitting in a vehicle all day. Track elephants on foot and get in touch with the local communities that are perfectly knowledgeable of their rich cultural and natural heritage.
Our safaris combine camel back-riding and walking throughout popular areas with a few that are seldom seen by western visitors, and range from 1 to 7 days. They offer a good alternative if you want to get up close to the animals of the African bush and to the local communities without sitting in a vehicle all day.
Our overnight camel safaris range from 3 - 7 days and are run throughout Maasailand, in the Lengai-Meru-Kilimanjaro Mountain Complex. Choosing to walk or ride the camels, bedecked with comfortable and modern leather saddles, you will set off around the savannah with views stretching as far as you can see. The pace is leisurely and, on the way, wildlife and birds will be pointed out as well as plants and trees traditionally used by the Maasai.
One day camel safaris and one day walking safaris are also available.
If you want to know more about the Maasai culture and if you wish to escape from the town stress for one day, this is the safari for you. A short but intense experience. You will visit a baboon cave, which every night is invaded by more than 300 baboons. The extraordinary of this place, where it is still possible to observe a good try of a dam made in the colonial period, are the youth “Morani” and the old “Olpaiani” Maasai in the 'Orpul'. A traditional Maasai period of men’s life, after which they become fitter and stronger. To reach this place, you will have the chance to pass trough a piece of Maasai Steppe.
3 day Longido camel safari - US $440 (3 days) ex flights
If you are looking for a short but intense adventure, this is the safari for you. You will go trough the plains below Mt Meru, where the Maasai step start to become wild. The Longido mountains is your 'guide' and will always tell you the right direction. You will cross, different kind of antelopes, zebras, giraffes, ostriches and many birds. The friendship of extraordinary Maasai and the unusual bush life are the fulcrum of our safaris.

In this corner of Tanzania, visitors will have the chance to observe the original Maasai living in harmony with the wildlife. The final destination is the Oldonyo Lengai (the translation from Ma into English is “Mountain of God” ) an active volcano, the holy place where even now Maasai go to complete their traditional rituals.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
