introduction to Lapland adventure holiday, Sweden

  • Exciting long weekend of invigorating winter activities
  • Chance to view the incredible Northern Lights
  • Spend a night at the fabulous Icehotel

    Dog Sleds & Snowmobiles
Based in the snowy northern outpost of Kiruna, the fun starts with a dog sled safari. With our professional guide, team of 12 huskies and 3-4 people per sled, we mush off into the wilderness. We shall take our lunch in a Sami tent in a beautiful nature reserve and can round the day off with a steaming sauna. Next, switching our transport to snowmobiles (optional), we can race across the snowfields towards Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest peak, stopping en route to try a spot of ice fishing. Back at base there will be the obligatory sauna to warm up.

    Reindeer Rides & the Icehotel
Transferring to Jukkasjarvi we check in at the world famous Icehotel, where everything from the chandeliers to the glasses for your drinks are made of ice - (here you can drink a vodka on the rocks!). We enjoy a short reindeer sled ride, then the afternoon is free for optional activities of your choice - snow-shoeing and cross country skiing are both available. Tonight, in what might be the strangest night of your life, you sleep on thick rugs on beds made of ice in rooms made of ice: a fitting end to our wild winter adventure.

    award winner
This tourism business won an Award in our 2008 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards - organised by responsibletravel.com in association with The Daily Telegraph, World Travel Market, Geographical Magazine, of the Royal Geographical Society and BBC World News.

Since 2004, the Awards has recognised individuals, companies and organisations in travel making a big commitment to the culture and economies of local communities and helping to conserve biodiversity.
how this holiday makes a difference
On this exciting short break in the Arctic Circle we partake in winter activities such as dogsledding and reindeer sleigh riding. Using only local suppliers on these excursions we make sure that the animals are well looked after and not required to pull over-loaded sleds in line with ETOUR (European Tourism Research Institute) guidelines.

Winter activities in Lapland are regulated by ETOUR, a voluntary organisation that seeks to maintain high environmental and winter activity standards. Our ground handling agent in Sweden is part of ETOUR and is very proactive in adhering to the rules regarding animal welfare, preservation of the local environment, limits on group sizes (our maximum group size on this tour is 14) and educating the local guides in environmental matters.

Our local agent also does lots of work with local schools and is currently providing financial support for an ‘anti-bullying programme’. They also offer local schools the chance to do winter excursions into the wilderness for little or no cost. This encourages the schools to do more outdoor trips and talks by the agent’s guides help the children learn more about this pristine environment and local wildlife.

The hotels that we use on this tour are locally owned meaning more of your money goes directly to the local people. The Icehotel is also very unique, every year 97% of it returns to nature in the spring melt; no other hotel in the world can match that!

As well as the above, we support a variety of charities and projects worldwide which support vulnerable communities and habitats including Friends of Conservation, Hope Worldwide and Send A Cow. We are also actively engaged with UK travel industry bodies which promote best practice in responsible tourism, such as Tourism Concern, The Travel Foundation and AITO. Our commitment to responsible tourism is not limited to our overseas operation and we have measures to ensure our UK office operates according to our responsible tourism policy. Carbon offsets for all flights booked with us are included in the tour cost.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
