introduction to Backcountry skiing holiday in Zermatt

Swiss Alps off piste skiing holiday.

In the shadow of the Matterhorn lies some of the most spectacular ski terrain in the Alps; the Zermatt/Cervinia lift system provides access to countless high-altitude off-piste descents where the quality of snow remains well into May. The terrain is ideally suited to truly confident skiers who are looking for a new challenge or to discover what "backcountry" or "all-mountain" skiing is really about.

During the week, you will be under the expert guidance of Robbie Fenlon UIAGM who is a specialist in backcountry skiing. While the focus will be on covering as much terrain as possible, significant time will be spent covering backcountry essentials such as avalanche awareness, ski-mountaineering techniques, glacier travel and off-piste safety.

You can be sure of pushing your skiing to a whole new level achieving descents on radical terrain that you thought was the preserve of extreme skiers - several descents start right from the summits of Alpine 4000m peaks. If you have ever looked beyond the boundary ropes to the lone skiers high on a high mountain powder field and thought "well, if only...", well now is your chance!

how this holiday makes a difference
Ski-mountaineering is an inherently sustainable activity and arguably the ultimate way to travel through the mountains in winter. Rather than using ski lifts and resorts, it relies on human power to journey through the mountains in an inspiring and unobtrusive way.

Our hope is that by offering ski-mountaineering holidays, we will encourage people to look beyond ski resorts and explore the undeveloped mountains of the Alps and Greater Ranges. Through such experiences, we believe that more people will come to appreciate and value the awesome wonder of wild places.

Since the beginning of our business seven years ago, we have been committed to the principles of sustainable and responsible tourism. Responsibility to the environments, the communities and economies in which we operate has always been and will continue to be at the very core of our business. Our Environment and Community Fund supports the Leroghi Mountains Conservation Fund in Kenya, Trees for Life in Scotland and Leave No Trace Progamme in Scotland.

This trip is run in partnership with a fantastic local family, native to Zermatt, who run a high-quality authentic hotel in the town. This family are passionate about Zermatt and the surrounding mountains and are active members of the community and movement to preserve the identity of Zermatt against development pressure for new holiday homes and facilities. The hotel's design is sensitive to its location and local materials feature throughout. Local produce is also a feature of the food served at the hotel.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
